Does anyone know the reasons why the National Trust has not taken back their land between Speke Hall and the Mersey?
The original 'deal' was for the Airport to return the land when the Link taxiway was no longer needed after the Airport relocated from Northern to Southern airfield. Obviously it took much, much longer than initially anticipated - some 20 years, but presumably the deal still applies.
TIA

Seem to recall Chris Preece, as Airport Director in the days of BAe ownership renegotiated the agreement at around the time (late 89/early 90) BAW were considering placing their new large aircraft maintenance here (Cardiff won out). If (big if) I am correct, then FoLA could have covered it in the period Jan 1989 to April 1992, or probably they didn't (or as the then editor, maybe the statement should be: maybe I didn't!). Seem to recollect the agreement for the Airport to exclusively use the land between NT Speke Hall and the shoreline was for 50 years - but I'm probably wrong as I've not doing too well on dim and distant matters tonight!!
You are right though, I am surprised that the NT has not been making a big issue of shore access from Speke Hall ever since aviation activity ceased on the north airfield August 2000 and the link taxi was fenced off from the airfield. Shore access certainly was a big demand at the time of the negotiations.

My understanding is that the airport had tenure of that bit or land until 2045 then it was due to return to Speke Hall. They were adamant that they wanted their river front back ASAP and I'm surprised, that as it's disused, they haven't asked for it. Maybe they have no money to return it to its original state if they do get it back!

Until last year there was pedestrian access to the link taxiway and adjacent land via the gravel footpath leading out of the Speke Hall grounds between the bund and the lake. For some reason (probably the ubiquitous "antisocial behaviour" excuse?) the metal gate at the end of the path has since been welded shut. Unless you feel like risking your neck clambering across a ditch full of brambles, this route is no longer available. As far as I know, the only way in and out of the park now is through the main entrance.
