I havn't noticed on this thread a shot of 'JD in its original white scheme, whilst it was named 'John Case'. So to put that right, here we are; This was taken at Liverpool in June 1993. Cheers Shaun

What was to become G-OJEM with Emerald. Former LIAT '748-2B V2-LDK. Spent four years stored at Manchester. Photographed on the southside in March 1994. It arrived at Manchester 20-02-91 and ferried to Southend 31-03-95 as G-BKAL registered to Clewer Aviation. Before Emerald acquired it in March 1996 it flew with Mount Cook Airlines as ZK-MCH. Registered G-OJEM 22-03-96 with 17210 hours ...and that was one of the newer ones! Cheers Shaun

I've been intending to contribute to this thread for a while now, being gently prodded by Viscount to do so. It is I who owns the cockpit of G-ORAL at Liverpool and it is wonderful to see a picture of Shaun at the controls of this very aircraft in an earlier post. We do, of course, have photos of quite a lot of different folk in that very seat - but the aircraft is firmly on the ground. Not only is the view out of the windscreens very definitely of an airborne aircraft, the instruments are telling us something sensible too! - unless you are very good at Photoshop, Shaun?!
It is interesting to see the photo of G-BEJD in white. This was applied over (not paint stripped) the previous Dan-Air scheme and then its final Reed Aviation scheme applied over that, presumably to save time and cost. Large areas of the Dan-Air scheme are coming to light as we work on putting the old bird back together and, if nothing else, it gives accurate positioning of cheat lines, etc, for when we re-paint her after reassembly.
This Saturday (9 March) will see the removal of the assembly trestles from under the re-attached nose section for re-positioning to the tail, for when we start the attaching that. All the internal nose stringers have been re-joined (there is also a plated skin joint (a butt strap!) to do yet) but much of the strength is back in to allow removal of the supports.
Currently, the tail fin and rudder of G-ORAL is next to JD to allow some stripping down of parts to help JD's tail fin to go back on, hopefully by early summer (it can be seen, whilst still attached to the aircraft at Blackpool in the background of the outdoor shots with the Reed Aviation paper plane logo on it). What is left will probably find its way to Roe Heritage at Woodford for display there. The lads at Speke have done a cracking job on replacing the tail planes on JD, all the hard work by Jon Howard drilling out many hundreds of rivets at Blackpool paying off in this instance.
I've come to have a very high regard for the 748 this last 5-or-so years. Of course, being a dyed-in-the-wool aviation enthusiast (I even applied for a job as a pilot to Emerald in the late nineties!), I knew exactly what a 748 was. It was doing some further research and then being involved with the scrapping of the fleet at Blackpool that got me emotionally involved with the type. I was determined we would have at least one at Liverpool.
I will try and post a little more frequently in the next few months. I will also get to grips with posting photographs though, unfortunately, nearly all of my personal shots of 748's are of them being chopped up (what a sad sight that was). Of course, I recorded our operation to take BEJD apart at Blackpool quite intricately if for no other reason than to assist its reassembly.
It is obvious that quite a few nwan chaps have a great liking for the 748 and many of those who contributed to this particular thread are great enthusiasts for the type. Whilst late on the scene, I intend to make sure we secure this noteworthy and charismatic NW British type at Liverpool. The hard bit is over (negotiation and dismantling) it just remains for us chaps at Speke to get our collective finger out and put JD back together - incredibly and appallingly, the only civilian 748 in preservation in the UK so far.
If you haven't been across to Speke to see us yet then we'd be more than pleased to show 748 enthusiasts around both ORAL's cockpit and the JD project. And we're always looking for members. Don't forget the forthcoming open day at the end of June, when there will be plenty else to see too.

Two more shots of Emerald aircraft in there previous lives. HS748-2B (1797) G-HDBD was used at Woodford along with G-SSFS for inter factory transport of employees (not an AOC operation) during the early nineties. It became G-EMRD with Emerald in 1996. HS748-2A (1777) CS-TAO in the colours of its previous operator SATA. In storage at Manchester in November 1993 prior to becoming G-BVOV with Emerald in 1994. ‘Paperplane’ I somehow missed seeing your post of March 7th until now. Its nice to see you are getting ‘JD back together. I must admit when I saw it cut into sections my hart sank, I didn’t think there was any way it would be structurally viable to rejoin the parts. So hats off to the team down at Liverpool, well done guys and I look forward to seeing ‘JD back on its legs. The photo of me flying 'AL was taken on 19-06-03 whilst on a charter for Air Contractors, Dublin to Stansted as ABR7005 and back to Dublin as ABR8005 ...a rare treat for us doing some day flying, hence the cheesy grin! Cheers Shaun
