BRITISH EAGLE AT LIVERPOOL FROM THE START OF 1964 A spin-off from the 1960's Visiting Aircraft Annual Logs, is this compilation of everything Eagle as the request of Eric Tarrant of British Eagle Historians. Thought that there may well be viewers of the everything British Eagle at Liverpool thread, that would appreciate this compilation.
It does emphasise the shortcomings of the 'Visiting Aircraft Logs', in that they did not record the regular day-in, day-out, comings and goings of the resident general aviation aircraft or the scheduled airlines operating from Liverpool Airport. What was recorded (with great diligence) is the first activity/visit by each British Eagle aircraft in every year, more optional was the recording of irregular activity eg delivery flights, charters, inbound diversions and other such events. Time has eroded why some of the entries were included in the logs; even if the reason has now faded, the aircraft have been included in this listing. The bold registration shows the first visit of the year by that aircraft to Liverpool. While the first visit by an aircraft in each year is noted, most subsequent revisits are not. 1963 No visits to Liverpool by British Eagle in 1963 even for negotiations/announcements/publicity before: Tue 31.12 G-AMOC V.701 Viscount from Heathrow British Eagle/Starways, for schedules morning of 01.01.64 G-AOCC V.755 Viscount from Heathrow British Eagle, for schedules morning of 01.01.64 1964 British Eagle took over Starways scheduled services from Liverpool/Speke on 01.01.64, the all-year round services being from Liverpool to London/Heathrow (with some services briefly calling at Chester/Hawarden) and Glasgow/Renfrew. The production lists usually state 'broken up Liverpool, April 1969'. Our Logs missed its return from lease to Air France in September 1968, and the local enthusiast magazine 'Flypast' has no mention after the end of 1968 - we presume that it was broken-up inside No.1 hangar, alongside G-ATDR which unexpectedly one day in November '69 emerged, near forgotten about and departed on a final ferry flight to Blackbushe, where it too was broken-up. 1970 Mon 16.03 G-ARXA B.175 Britannia 313 delivered to Luton to Monarch for spares, broken-up 11.70 This, some 16 months after the collapse, was the final British Eagle related movement at Liverpool Airport.

For some years I’ve been collecting together British Eagle images to use on this thread. A few I had previously used earlier in the thread and have now replaced like-for-like with images no longer disrupted by Photobucket’s watermark. I now have 80 or so, less a dozen re-used earlier, to share. Some have been used on other threads on NWAN, some will be familiar from books and magazines, others have not left their box or album in decades. My intention is to cover as many of the British Eagle aircraft with images while at Liverpool 1964-68 as possible. Seems logical to group by type and present in registration sequence, splitting the types between a number of posts. Sit back, scroll through – you are in for a treat! Bookmark this thread, and come back during the long winter evenings, time and time again, to scroll through wallowing in nostalgia for times 60 to 55 years ago and just smell that burnt kerosene and join me in recalling the halcyon days of youth out on the airport balcony! Right, enough of all that. Starting with a few movements and images from before the arrival of British Eagle at Liverpool on 1st January 1964. TRACED MOVEMENTS 1950-1963 As this account of British Eagle effectively commences on 1st January 1964, charters into Liverpool by Eagle aircraft in the ‘50s and very early ‘60s had earlier been omitted. A chance here to put that right, although a few general images of Bermuda Airlines and Cunard Eagle aircraft do appear earlier on this thread. 10.06.50 Sat G-AGNY Avro 685 York C.1 from Linton on Ouse Eagle Aviation 23.12.50 Sat G-AJPF Douglas C-47A Dakota 3 Eagle Aviation 18.02.51 Sun G-AGNZ Avro 685 York C.1 to Goteborg,Sweden Eagle Aviation, dep on 19th 20.02.51 Tue G-AGNZ Avro 685 York C.1 likely back from Goteborg Eagle Aviation 06.04.51 Fri G-AGNZ Avro 685 York C.1 Eagle Aviation 17.05.51 Thu G-AGNY Avro 685 York C.1 to Luton Eagle Aviation 28.05.55 Sat G-AHCT Douglas C-47A Dakota 3 Eagle Aviation 07.06.55 Tue G-AHPM Vickers 510 Viking 1B Eagle Aircraft Services 07.06.55 Tue G-AJCD Vickers 610 Viking 1B Eagle Aircraft Services 30.04.56 Mon G-AMGJ Vickers 635 Viking 1B f&t Blackbushe Eagle Aviation 22.05.57 Wed G-AJBN Vickers 610 Viking 1B f&t Blackbushe Eagle Aviation 06.12.57 Fri G-AJBW Vickers 610 Viking 1B London Air Port-Ringway Eagle Aviation, divert in QAL Ringway (QAL is a WWII era 'Q' code, now 'WX') 06.12.57 Fri G-AJPH Vickers 618 Viking 1B Hamburg-Ringway Eagle Aviation, divert in QAL Ringway 16.01.58 Thu G-AJPH Vickers 618 Viking 1B Hamburg-Ringway, dep 18th. AVRO YORK I know it is not Liverpool, indeed G-AMGK is not recorded as visiting Speke, however it is the only Eagle Aviation Ltd Avro York image that I have easy access to and certainly has never been published before. G-AMGK served with Eagle December 1950 to November 1952. The wings, undercarriage and tails are all Lancaster, the fuselage is new build. VICKERS VIKINGS Undated and not at Liverpool, a fine illustration of Vickers Viking G-AJBO, possibly at Blackbushe. Retained much of the former BEA colours and individual name in the Admiral class as John Benbow. Too good a photo not to share. Written-off undershooting the runway at Blackbushe on 1st May 1957. G-AMNX at Liverpool. Initially operated by South African Airways, later to BEA and sold to Eagle Aviation May 1955, with individual ‘Admiral’ class name ‘Sir Philip Broke’. Converted to a freighter June 1960 and re-registered to Cunard Eagle Airways January 1961. Aircraft was withdrawn from use at Heathrow December 1961. Good to find an image of an Eagle Viking at Speke, so the slight case of camera shake hardly matters. I've traced two visits, 30.7.58 f&t Lyneham, and the more likely candidate visit for the shot 5.5.60 f&t Heathrow. In a later Eagle Airways colour scheme, and fore-runner of the British Eagle scheme is G-AHPM at Speke likely in 1960. Could be two shots at different times on the same day (apron is drier in the lower image), indeed quite possibly from the same camera as the focus is not quite sharp on either. As the table above shows, G-AHPM is known to have visited five times on two different days in the period it was flown by Eagle Airways. Another former BEA aircraft, G-AHPM was sold to Eagle Aviation July 1953. Re-registered to Cunard Eagle January 1961 and on 9th August 1961 perished in when it flew into a mountain 21 miles NE of Stavanger, inbound from Heathrow. All 39 occupants killed.

THE VICKERS VISCOUNT WITH BRITISH EAGLE Before the start of January 1964 Eagle had operated several Viscounts, both series 700 and the larger series 800. By the end of 1963 only two series 700s, G-AOCB and G-AOCC remained in the fleet. To take-on the Starways schedule of flights from the 1st January 1964 more Viscount aircraft were required. These were obtained by leasing aircraft from Channel Airways, and later from Aviation Overhauls and Cambrian Airways. By the summer months of 1964 5 aircraft had been acquired on lease from Channel and Aviation Overhauls, with a sixth for the winter 64/65 timetable as Britannias were stood down on some internal services. The leased in aircraft mostly had full British Eagle scheme applied. Initially, for a couple of months the ‘Starways’ name was applied to the British Eagle colours. While 3 aircraft are known to have worn 'Starways' titles most photographs depict G-AMOC, possibly as this aircraft was the first in service, so around for longer. Once the legalities of exchanging routes from one airline to another were completed, the 'Starways' titling was replaced by standard 'British Eagle' titles around May 1964. In spring 1965 4 Viscounts were acquired from United Arab (formerly Misair) Airlines of Egypt, although getting them ready for service took longer than expected, so for several weeks a HS.748 was leased from Skyways to cover the aircraft shortage. Delivery of the final aircraft (G-ATFN) was delayed as additional work was undertaken in Egypt to bring it up to airworthy condition, however it did arrive in basic British Eagle colours. Aircraft from Channel Airways were occasionally used for a day or so to cover for temporary AoG (aircraft on ground) issues. Some appear in the 'aircraft used through Liverpool' listings on an earlier post. So my challenge is to find, in registration order, images of as many of the Viscounts flown by British Eagle from the start of January 1964 as possible. In registration sequence, the Viscounts used by British Eagle 1964 to 1968 were: G-ALWF, G-AMOA, G-AMOC, G-AMOE, G-AMOH, G-AMOO, G-AOCB, G-AOCC, G-APZB, G-ANRS, G-ATDR, G-ATDU, G-ATFN. Just to confuse, I'll present the photographs in the sequence the aircraft entered service with British Eagle, so commence with G-AOCB and G-AOCC. G-AOCB Viscount 755D. First served with Cunard Eagle as VR-BBL in January 1961, then from September 1962 as G-AOCB. To British Eagle September 1963 and on repaint named "City of Edinburgh". Ferried to Liverpool on 31st December 1963 to commence Liverpool based schedules on 1st January 1964. Was given a C of A overhaul at Liverpool which was completed with an air test on 25th March 1968 and delivered the following day on sale to Invicta Airways at Manston. From the angle G-AOCB is likely landing 26, over Speke Hall Avenue (roughly where Dobbies now is) G-AOCB "City of Edinburgh" G-AOCB on 9th June 1967. The Viscount in the background is a Treffield Aviation machine, in two-tone blue scheme. The rudder on the extreme right is an Aer Turas Douglas DC-4. Note the Union Jack above the cheat line. Applied around May/June 1966 compare with the shots above. G-AOCC Viscount 755D. First served with Cunard Eagle as VR-BBM in January 1961, then from September 1962 as G-AOCC. To British Eagle September 1963 and on repaint named "City of Belfast". First visit to Liverpool on British Eagle schedules was 12th January 1964. Was given a C of A overhaul at Liverpool which was completed with an air test on 31st January 1968 and delivered the following day on sale to Invicta Airways at Manston. G-AOCC out on the western with tow truck and tow bar on 15th May 1965. Undated, "City of Belfast". 20th October 1964 at Liverpool. G-AOCC, this time during April 1967. Again note the Union Jack beside the airline name, not there on earlier shots. G-AMOC Viscount 701. Leased from Channel Airways and delivered Southend-Heathrow 28th December 1963 and ferried to Liverpool on 31st December 1963 to commence Liverpool based schedules on 1st January 1964 with 'Starways' cabin titles but initially without the fleet name "City of Glasgow" applied. 'British Eagle' cabin titles applied circa May 1964. Was returned to Channel Airways 28th April 1965 after 16 months with British Eagle. A few references also give "City of Cardiff" for this aircraft, although I'm sceptical unless it was a one-day-only sticker for a Cardiff related event. G-AMOC with Starways titles April 1964, but no "City of Glasgow" name applied yet. Another shot of G-AMOC while wearing 'Starways' titles. Undated, seen landing across Speke Hall Avenue for a 26 landing. Dated April 1964 this is G-AMOC at Heathrow in 'Starways' cabin roof titles but no fleet name yet applied. "City of Glasgow" with 'British Eagle' titles in August 1964. G-AMOH Viscount 701. Leased from Channel Airways and first appeared at Liverpool on 19th February 1964 on a Heathrow-Chester-Liverpool service. Named "City of Liverpool" and initially for a few months wore 'Starways' cabin titles. Aircraft returned to Channel Airways March 1965 or on 2nd April 1965 depending on reference source. Unfortunately undated, but an interesting one this, as G-AMOH is still in full Channel Airways scheme, but from the red passenger information sign is clearly being prepared for a departure with British Eagle passengers on a London schedule. Photo credit: Ian Keast. G-AMOE Viscount 701. Leased from Channel Airways and delivered to Heathrow 26th March 1964 and appeared at Liverpool the following day on a Heathrow scheduled service. Fleet name "City of Manchester". Briefly with 'Starways' cabin titles before replaced with 'British Eagle'. While references give this as lease ended December 1964, we have this as still in service at Liverpool in January 1965, until delivery to Cambridge on 20th January 1965 for Marshalls to ready the aircraft for delivery to new owners, Cambrian Airways. Simply dated '1964', proof of G-AMOE briefly wearing 'Starways' cabin titles. Seen at Heathrow. Incidentally, the Britannia tail is either G-ANCG or G-ANCH while in Transcontinental of Argentina colours awaiting their turn for freighter conversion and operation with British Eagle. G-AMOO Viscount 701. Leased from Channel Airways during May 1964 and first appeared on a Heathrow service to Liverpool on 12th May 1964. Named "City of Birmingham". References have this as returned to Channel on 16th October 1965. However we have it as still in service January 1966 and not departing Liverpool for Southend until 16th April 1966 at the end of lease. The longest serving of the aircraft leased from Channel. Considering this aircraft operated for nearly two years, longer than any of the other leased Viscounts, it is one I shouldn't be lacking an image for! G-APZB Viscount 707. This aircraft was a former Starways aircraft, and leased for 3 short periods of use. The first period was on lease from Aviation Overhauls at Liverpool. It made a C of A test flight on 2nd June 1964 then was resprayed in British Eagle colours. The first use on British Eagle services was not noted by us at the time. Named "City of Newcastle". At the end of the lease, G-APZB was delivered to Southend on sale to Channel Airways 5th November 1964 and the fleet name passed to G-AMOA. However, still in full British Eagle colours it was back at Liverpool on 20th January 1965, now named "City of Manchester" (as a direct replacement for G-AMOE which came off lease the same day). This lease lasted for 4 months, before G-APZB was returned back to Channel Airways. However just two weeks later G-APZB was back at Liverpool on 7th June 1965 with no fleet name as the lease was to last just one week, with the aircraft departing on 13th June 1965. G-APZB during the first period of lease to British Eagle as "City of Newcastle". Undated. G-AMOA Viscount 701. On lease from Channel Airways for 4 months, delivered Southend-Liverpool on 4th November 1964 in full British Eagle scheme as "City of Newcastle" (as a direct replacement for temporary G-APZB). Returned to Channel on 4th March 1965. Only on a short winter lease, no photo of this one availableG-ALWF Viscount 701. Taken on a 6 month lease, delivered to Liverpool from Southend 18th November 1964 and returned from Liverpool to Southend on 25th May 1965. During this period it was in full British Eagle colours, with name "City of Exeter". However, the aircraft was back on Liverpool service for a week 14th June 1965 as a 'cover' aircraft. Although already returned to full Channel Airways scheme, the panel on the nose where the British Eagle fleet name "City of Exeter" had been can be seen. G-ANRS Viscount 733. Delivered to Heathrow March 1965 for overhaul and acquiring a British C of A. First visited Liverpool on a scheduled service 25th May 1965, "City of Newcastle". Autumn 1967 entered storage at Liverpool engineless. Back into service 5th May 1968 and in service on collapse of British Eagle 8th November 1968. Sold to Cambrian it found its way to Cardiff/Rhoose where it was scrapped for spares by Cambrian. At the east end of the terminal infront of No.2 hangar on 2nd November 1965. Two camera, different rolls of film, different results. "City of Newcastle" very likely early 1966 as work is in progress on laying concrete to form the three 'finger' aprons. Parked out on the western apron during the period she was stored without engines winter 1967/68. "City of Newcastle". The Don Stephens shot (lower) is dated 24th February 1968. G-ATDR Viscount 739. Delivered from Cairo via Heathrow still in United Arab colours as SU-AKN on 7th May 1965. Overhaul and repaint at Liverpool, with an air test for British C of A flown on 17th June 1965 and entered service shortly afterwards. Named "City of Glasgow". In service on collapse of British Eagle 8th November 1968 and stored inside No.1 hangar. Ferry flight Liverpool to Blackbushe 20th November 1969 where it was scrapped the following month. Clearly work has commenced stripping the aircraft for inspection with many of the windows removed. Presumably space was required inside No.1 hangar on the 11th May 1965 when both these photos were taken with different cameras! Undated. G-ATDR "City of Glasgow" G-ATDR turning into its parking place on the apron while under taxi power, with just the two inner engines running. Likely 1965 before work on construction of the three finger aprons. G-ATDR "City of Glasgow" on a snowy day, 9th January 1968. G-ATDU Viscount 739A. Delivered to Heathrow 14th May 1965. Overhauled at Heathrow and British C of A awarded 27th June 1965 and in to service soon after. First visit to Liverpool on a scheduled flight was on 1st July 1965. Named "City of Liverpool". Prepared for lease to Air France in their full colour scheme at Liverpool and departed for Barcelona on 31st March 1968. Returned to Liverpool September 1968 (the date was not recorded by us) and entered No.1 hangar at Liverpool for an overhaul and respray. This was never completed when on 8th November 1968 British Eagle ceased flying. The aircraft was reduced for spares, then scrapped still inside the hangar and removed by road May 1969 . Photo both dated 21st July 1965. Two cameras, two rolls of film. G-ATDU in full British Eagle colours as "City of Liverpool". Photo March 1967 G-ATDU "City of Liverpool" seen landing at Speke March 1968, presumably on 28 (now 27) a location rarely used by photographers at a time when the balcony provided such a great view of airliners on the apron. Same aircraft, G-ATDU, seen again right at the end of March 1968, shortly before delivery to Air France on lease. By the time British Eagle ceased operations in November 1968 the aircraft was back at Liverpool and was scrapped here the following year Freshly repainted and outside No.1 hangar on 30th March 1968, ready for delivery the following day out on lease to Air France. G-ATFN Viscount 739A. Delivered in to Liverpool via Marseilles on 30th September 1965, later than the others as extended attention was required before the ferry flight was possible. Overhauled and a C of A air test flown on 24th November 1965. Named "City of Truro". Briefly leased to Air France 20th March 1968 for 10 days until G-ATDU delivered out on lease in full Air France colours on 31st March. Aircraft crashed on 8th August 1968 on to the Munich to Nuremburg section of autobahn at Langenbruck, to the north of Munich when the aircraft disintegrated in flight en route Heathrow to Innsbruck. All 44 passengers and 4 crew perished. G-ATFN on a damp, cold, gloomy 10th February 1966 While the print is titled 'Cardiff sometime 1965-1968', this shot is quite clearly outside the side door of No.1 hangar at Liverpool and the cabin top flag is between mid 1966 and 1968, Rather an odd shot with the tail in focus and the nose not. More likely a darkroom issue than a camera one. The Britannia parked out on the spur is a Transglobe machine with 'Britannia across the top of the tail, but the Transglobe 'winged T' logo on the tail removed, so more than likely G-ANCH in February 1968 awaiting its turn in the hangar for overhaul and repaint into Ghana Airlines colours (see a later photo post). Apron night view as seen from Gate 2 at the west end of the terminal building. G-ATFN "City of Truro" on 28th May 1968. I do have a few more, mostly images used on other threads and all of the final 4 aircraft so I don't see much need to add as there are plenty already! Photo threads for C-54, Britannia, BAC-111 and the more non-Liverpool shots of Britannia, BAC-111 and Boeing 707s. Plenty to go yet.
