Driving home this morning looking from Daresbury over the estuary at Fiddlers Ferry and a question came to mind: Is there any restriction/rules regarding aircraft flying through/near the emmissions that come from the Cooling Towers?

Good Question Mate. When i come back from the isle of man on monday we flew round it and had a good view over the whole site but never went near the towers.

Yes, I understand that there is no restriction over the actual footprint of the area. My query more specifically relates to the steam that's emitted. Thanks for your replies NWVRT and Hunter.

There is no law permitting the flight through venting steam. However good airmanship would be to avoid getting into vented steam. For a vfr only ppl holder it is outside there limitation to fly through cloud. it is also illegal to fly within 500 ft of a building or person, and would be the biggest factor preventing you.
However, if you had an imc rating and the steam clouds extended above 500 ft from the top of the cooling tower, and you didn't mind losing all visibility so close to the airport, then yes, you could fly through the venting steam :-)

I can well remember in the days when the active Ince Power Station was a VFR reporting point, being flown over the top of the cooling towers at 1,000-1,200ft in the clear above the steam, and getting a wholloping thump out of the heat driven up-draft and gut-wrenching sink from the downdraught following. After that first time, we were always a little more circumspect of taking the reporting point spot on and headed whichever side was upwind, never being too sure just how much punishment 'Mike Papa' could take!

Vented steam was brilliant when gliding at RAF Burtonwood and also using the same stuff being sent up from John Summers Steel Works when gliding from from RAF Sealand, however the draw back was the smell when using it.
