In January, this year to escape the hussle and bussle of Saigon/Ho Chi Minh city,I took a hydrofoil to Vung tau island off the southern coast of Vietnam,it was quite a trip, hope you find this of interest.
The hydrofoil terminal in Saigon on the very busy Saigon river, with two operators vying for my business,Petro express and Vina express, fares were quite competitive for the 1 hour 30 minute trip down the Saigon river, and across the sea to Vung Tau island.
Our Hydrofoil arrives at the terminal.
The rear cabin of our hydrofoil.Vina express03!
arriving at Vung tau after 1 and a half hours
Vung tau is a beautiful island, but oil exploration is accelerating at a massive rate.
Leaving Vung Tau island returning to Saigon a few days later,I have found a very nice vantage point for taking photos from on the hydrofoil, with health and safery out the window.
After about 20 minutes I noticed another hydrofoil closing up on us.
We had now entered the Saigon river channel, with the other hydrofoil overhauling us.
Overtaking around a bend in the river at 35 knots,no problem, this is Vietnam,
Now well ahead,I think they must have had the turbo on!.
Massive electric pylons carry cables across the Saigon river,
A river ferry awaiting its turn to cross.
Another hydrofoil, southbound to Vung tau, coming under the Saigon bridge.
The Saigon river is packed full of ships, some just anchored awaiting berths.
This is the Azamara Quest, shortly after I took this this ship caught fire off the Phililpine Islands, fortunately with no loss of life.
The Saigon skyline, and the end of the trip.
Hope you enjoyed this report on a form of transport not often reported on.
thanks for looking.
