this might make a few people laugh at what arriva bosses were planning for this route. They wanted to bring the retired bendibuses from london to be used on this service. luckily for us they used there brain and decided against it. its never full so puting them on would of been a joke

Unfortunately, its no joke Arriva and all the other London operating company's have been left with a surplus of bendi-buses that no-one wants. There not even to the same speck as the rest of Europe. Due to the vehicles size it can't be operated in Liverpool City Centre and therefore the 501 would have been ideal for it. Also, the running costs are by far in excess of the standard bus but this may not have been too big a factor as the 501 is a Merseytravel contract.
On a personal note, I agree, this route is a total waste of Community Charge payers money. Hardly anyone uses it, as no one will wait more than a few minutes for a service that cuts less than five minutes off standard running times. Even when the 501 is sitting in South Parkway and clearly visible to all, the 80A and 86A are still the preferred option if they turn up first. Well, would you bother waiting if time wasn't a factor?

I wonder what this latest trial will bring to light as the last one, carried out about 5 years ago, determined they were not suitable for Liverpool. They've also narrowed the roads within the city centre since then. Still, I suppose they are too expensive to throw on the scrap heap and therefore all options must be kept open.

Ridiculous that this finishes about 7pm, and doesnt even run at weekends.
If they're going to do it, do it properly.

The 86A only takes three to four minutes longer to get from South Parkway to the Airport and runs every fifteen minutes at night and weekends. Also the 80A which takes about five minutes longer runs every thirty minutes at night and Sundays. The 501 doesn't take a lot of passengers as few people bother waiting for it. In fact its not really required at all but the powers that be, want it there.

Lets hope the passengers don't manage to get themselves lost in the vast space on their way to South Parkway. At least there will be no shortage of seats for them to choose from. ;D

They use the bendy-buses on the staff car park run at Manchester. I'm sure the drivers must hate them - they have at least three roundabouts to negotiate between the car park and the terminal.

I see that the Air Link liveried bendy bus is being used on the 699 University route.

I don't know if the AirLink one has been used but the bendy I saw on the 699 yesterday was in normal green (interurban) livery so I'm guessing it's one of the extra ones.
Not a bad idea really - the route avoids roads they can't be used on, and students are least likely to complain.
