I’m sure you’re right but the cost would be astronomical and the benefits limited. Any hope of a station would depend on serving the wider Speke estate rather than just the airport.

You say that the cost would be astronomical but there are government grants for these sort of infrastructure projects. Tagging on an extension into the Speke estate could swing it. When you look at the Metrolink extension to the Trafford Centre it runs through derelict dockland and some industrial estates. People travelling to the Trafford Centre itself mainly use cars as they do not wish to carry their purchases on a tram into Manchester and then change to another form of transport to outlying districts.

A leg south of Liverpool Parkway to the airport via Speke Hall Avenue into the terminal building area thence to Ditton junction via a station within the Speke estate would provide a link on to Runcorn and Crewe. The money could come from the abandoned HS2 project - or will the Government squirrel that away for projects south of Watford? It is a solution that has been suggested before but it doesn’t seem to get beyond the suggestion stage.

Sometimes I think it’s when they are moving stock from the airside one to landslide or they have gone the toilet or something.

It would be expensive, but we seem much more huge projects in London, in reality this would be short branch, not another Elizabeth Line. It could also hugely improve transport for Speke Estate as well as the airport.

If something isn't pushed it with be another London Underground extension or similar.

The Metro Mayor appears quite often to think outside the box (box being LCR). A lot of airports within the UK have rail connections but if the Mayor and his staff bothered to think in the box they would see that the Airport is crying out for better connectivity.

Thats the point, he isnt bothered.
He was invited to the Jet2 launch, didnt go.
Many things are published by the LCR and the future way in which things are planned. Many things, except few show the airport.

I refer you back to my previous post about costs and business case. Nobody, not the Metro Mayor or anyone else will be able to make an effective business case for a rail link to the (privately owned and operated) airport.
The airport won’t either. The numbers will not stack up. The new Headbolt Lane station in Kirkby cost northwards of £80m. The amount of engineering work required to get a line to the airport would be far in excess of that. Manchester Airport had to contribute £50m to get the tram extended to there.
Few would argue the benefits to the airport that a rail link would bring. But on their own they would not and never will be enough.

But if a rail link could also provide a station for Speke, which has to reply on buses, would that not bolster the need. If not, something must happen, a tram or something. Just get on a build something !

The cost of these railway infrastructures is enormous. The airport is not busy enough nor will it ever be, to justify the expenditure. If a station pre existed such as a Souhampton that would be a different thing. We missed that boat ( train) many years ago when the railway passed the front entrance of the terminal. Had it been done then a cheap link down 17/35 would have done the job to the new place. Only as part of a scheme providing access to other populated and commercial areas does it stand any chance. For a fraction of the cost, targeted road improvements and busways using modern comfortable coaches with luggage space and very limited stops would do a better job and be available in two to three years and not ten( or twenty)
