While I was away in Yorkshire recently, I had a trip out with my brother (Network Rail traffic manager, York, so bit of a busman's holiday for him!) to three railway museums in one day - Locomotion/NRM at Shildon, Head of Steam Museum, North Road Darlington and the NRM, York. The main objective was to go to Shildon and see the two recently repatriated Gresley A4s - 60008 Dwight D Eisenhower from the US National Railroad Museum in Green Bay Wisconsin (there since 1964) and 60010 Dominion of Canada from the Canadian Railway Museum, near Montreal (there since 1966) - before they have their cosmetic restoration work carried out. Here are some photos of the two A4s. Incidentally, we also saw 60009 Union of South Africa operating out of York that day and also saw Mallard in the NRM, so four A4s in one day was pretty good! Since these photos were taken 60008 has travelled down by road to the NRM at York for restoration and 60010 is in the restoration area at Shildon - to be sanded down and painted garter blue.... not before I got a chunk of the brunswick green paint/rust that fell off when I prodded it! Despite appearances, it is 60008/DDE which has the worst corrosion... apparently requiring lots of filler.

Are thy now resident in the UK or are they going back after restoration and show? If our cousins over the pond can't look after them we should keep them!

Are thy now resident in the UK or are they going back after restoration and show? If our cousins over the pond can't look after them we should keep them! They are both scheduled to return across the Atlantic in early 2014 (sadly!). There will be plenty of opportunities to see them at the NRM, but the main event where all six surviving A4s ( the others being Bittern, Sir Nigel Gresley, Union of South Africa and Mallard) are gathered together in the main hall of the NRM to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mallard's 126 mph run in July will be a ticketed event and it is rumoured that the ticket prices will be astronomical for this "one-off" . An evening photo- shoot of three at Shildon the week before I went was priced at £60 and it is anticipated that the NRM event will be considerably more. Dave
