All this shows the benefit of having a spare runway just in case one gets blocked!

Brian the solo pilot shot is brilliant it looks like he is reading the instruction book. "On finals turn to Page 43 chapter 6, quickly"

All this shows the benefit of having a spare runway just in case one gets blocked! Sorry to be thick - but why did they divert? Manchester has two runways - was it that busy or were the fire service committed?

Me thinks he was being sarcastic. Yes, I realise that, but the basic question remains - why did they divert?

The answer is earlier (on page 1) of this thread, and on the daily Manchester thread too. The A.380 developed a fault in the nose wheel steering system that prevented the aircraft from leaving the runway. While the aircraft was being inspected etc and removed, presumably with the fire services in atttendance, a considerable 'queue' built up behind in the hold and on the ground. The majority of diversions into LJLA appear to have taken place after Manchester re-openned with aircraft that had been in the hold but could not wait until their turn in the delayed sequence.
Just why Manchester just simply could not turn on the ILS and lights on the other runway and use it, has yet to be explained though. I would assume maintenance was in progress and the surface could not cleared and cleaned at a moments notice, rather than the fire service being occupied , so not on full readiness.

I think there is lighting work taking place on 05R until the end of March so it is only available at night.

Carmedics explanation was spot on.
There was no fire cover for 05R and as the whole incident lasted around 30 minutes, by the time the fire cover was re-instated, 05L was re-opened.
It was purely the sequence of the flights and the fact traffic was backed up which caused them to divert

A very interesting in-sight into airport operations. Isn't it just bad luck that number 2 is out of service when you need it?
I would be interested to know, whether or not the machines which diverted to Liverpool eventually took off with their passegers to Manchester, or were the passengers bussed, and/or did new passengers come to Liverpool for their departues?
