I spent a snowy afternoon scanning some old slides, and found this one. I'm not sure where or when I took the photo,as I never cross-referenced my slides with logs, but best guess is Heathrow approach in the 1980s. Clearly visible beneath the left wing of this 747,inboard of the number 2 engine nacelle,a spare engine is mounted. Note that the intake does not appear to be covered or protected from damage in any way. I vaguely recall observing this phenomenon on several types and operators. El Al (amongst others) carried spare engines on their 747s,and I think some 707s also had them. A dead engine in the slipstream must have caused enormous drag, and presumably propulsion technology became more reliable,as the practice of lugging a spare around was short-lived. Attachments:

I remember seeing a PanAm 747 doing the same thing at LHR on more than one occasion. Also PIA.......and the VC10 could carry a fifth engine in a pod under the left wing too!!

B.747-244B ZS-SAM which diverted into Manchester on the 28th October 1975, arrived complete with fifth engine.
I remember doing more than a 'double-take' when I saw it!

Hi Mark,
None that I can immediately find and I am away from Wednesday until the Saturday after Easter. Unfortunately, I only had a b/w roll in the camera at the time. I know I have more pics, but only found this so fast as I had already scanned it into the comp.
I knew this subject had come up before, but couldn't find it...thanks to ian531 for the link!
Cheers,
Dave
