Hi
Was reading my new copy of Wrecks and Relics last week and looked up Bruntingthorpe ,turned out there was an open day yesterday and having never been two of us went to the event. Have to say this was one of the best days I have ever spent at a "show" and that is with a lifetime of shows. This place is run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. Events are low key and probably only a couple of thousand people. You can walk round see, smell and touch the aircraft and go on several . Sit in a Lightning cockpit , sit in a Buccaneer, you cant do that in many places these days. The event harks back to when we did not have to be told where to stand or walk by our stupid government. The Victor came up the taxiway and as the photos show the wing went over you. They even said that they thought it would be more fun to pull the VC10 through the crowd to get to the runway. One guy did not move his car , so refuelling pod over the boot. Wonderful.
The crowd line is literally 10 feet from the runway edge. Nothing flies except a stored 737 departed to Shannon. N... something, and the VC10, Vulcan and yes a flying Lightning.
The taxi runs hold little back, full power, reheat wow like proper air shows used to be.
Line up of 5 ex Raf Tristars, load of Cathay 747, and one or more ex RAF VC10 but not possible to get up there. When we enquired how far up we could go towards the stored stuff they said, no further than the Nimrod. Ooops we walked past that ages ago. So no fences, great fun and uniques living aircraft.
For those who have never visited I say go, next open days apparently May and June Bank holidays 2015. See you there.
