The comment relating to Barton would probably be more appropriate to attract business if it did not have grass runways. There is something sadly wrong with the business world in UK especially when banks and money lenders allow enormous debts to continue to build and build into millions of pounds of debt and then force the affected business to fold.

I gather that the current situation is that the AIRPORT will close (Buildings and everything related to the operation of a licenced aerodrome) but that the aerodrome may continue in use, as unlicensed. This gives some breathing space but not for long. Just look at what happened at Manston after it was bought for £1.
The local authority have powers to impose conditions on development. There are very belated moves in government circles to safeguard aviation facilities. Finally the economic value of GA has been recognised, so some kind of facility might survive.

I certainly vainly hope the airport can survive, which I somewhat doubt once the purse string holders make a decision. It is a shame as Blackpool itself has lost its appeal and value. I have had relatives who arrived from Germany and looking for a day out went there only to be so shocked at the dirty state of the place and lack of anything appealing to toddlers in a family group returned vowing never to return to the place. apparently the Sun Center was littered with dirty and used nappies left by the myriad of foreigners who filled the place and treated it like a rubbish dump. So maybe the airport closing is one more sign of the extensive decline of an iconic holiday place.

I certainly hope it survives, always enjoy revisiting, it spurned my interest of 55yrs in aviation, staying at Squires Gate holiday camp taking train numbers at the station, then watching the C.47's of Aer Lingus and B.170's of Silver City, 1st flight in G-ADDI round the tower. Sad day indeed if this comes to pass...

Blackpool as a destination has lost a lot of appeal. Also we as consumers have now a vast myriad of choice how to spend our disposable income. It is virtually as cheap for a weekend away to jump on a plane to Spain and stay in a decent hotel as stay in an overpriced poor quality accommodation in most Uk resorts. Blackpool is not unique in this although I went to see the lights and was also dismayed at the rundown tired appearance of the resort. All uk resorts need to realise that they are competing with European resorts for customers

Blackpool is not unique in this although I went to see the lights and was also dismayed at the rundown tired appearance of the resort. All uk resorts need to realise that they are competing with European resorts for customers I would wholly agree with that. We (wife and I) went there last October (2013) for the day, and bearing in mind it was my visit there since 1975, although an enjoyable day was had including seeing the lights too, sadly in a lot of respects, some venues / locations / visitors and also general impression, it had not changed since my last visit! I think that is sad reflection on Blackpool as a whole and it is highly unlikely we will go back either. Not sure what the answer is to change Blackpool and its perception but clearly would involve a lot of money but the prospect of the airport closing will not help its future prospects either. May I add this is no reflection on most of the local people who reside in the town, as they were nice and friendly of those we encountered but I did find the railway station staff "cold" in their reception with ALL people which has I suspect something to do with people being drunk / rowdy either arriving or departing by train.

Rather sad comments about the town of Blackpool, but having not been there for at least 12 years, who am I to argue. It was never chic but it was always fun. My wife and I were loved dancing and we spent good times in that ballroom.
I hope the airport, or at least the aerodrome, flying clubs, GA and maintenance can hold out.

Yesterday the airport claimed to be out of fuel and aircraft should tanker in for next departure. Caused yesterday morning's two Jet2 departures to make a fuel stop at East Midlands and last night's Dalaman arrival went to Manchester as a result of the fuel issue, with passengers bused to Blackpool.
This only re-inforces my poor opinion of the management at Blackpool airport. What a way to treat passengers. This simply should not be happening, even with an impending threatened closure.
Looks like they are already trying to force Jet2 to cease operations.

Who supplies the fuel at BLK? Is it the airport itself, or is it one of the main fuel suppliers?
Apparently it's the airport, so presumably they're unwilling (or unable) to pay their fuel supplier. Jet2 flights are being routed via EMA I believe. It seems a bit bizarre when the airport isn't due to stop operating for another week. Is this some sort of reprisal against Jet2 for the court case, I wonder?

Somewhat ironic that Blackpool Council today announced they are spending £14m on building a new hotel to attract tourists
