linkMildenhall's a bit of a surprise, though it's a shadow if its' former self. I thought they'd pulled out of Alconbury years ago, after they moved the U-2 operations elsewhere. The runways are used for parking new cars and by distribution companies nowadays. I assume it was just a token presence, rather like Burtonwood after it closed. Molesworth is linked into their intelligence analysis systems, so presumably this is being accommodated elsewhere. Notable that all three are in Cambridgeshire (well, Mildenhall is in Suffolk - just!), where there is currently a desperate shortage of building land. Draw your own conclusions... It'll be sad to see Mildenhall go. In its day it held arguably the best airshow in Europe, not just for the aircraft, but the whole thing - entertainment for all ages, good cheap food, etc., etc. Reminiscent of Burtonwood when it held its annual airshow.

Hmmm, looks like they're keeping Diego Garcia then. I think its lease comes up for re-negotiation in a year or so. It must be the only British territory where the British are not allowed to go!

Sad news indeed but could take a few years to complete. A final Mildenhall 'Farewell' airshow would go down well with many enthusiasts before it closes. Was always a favourite for me.

Just reading Flight Global and it says that Mildenhall is to close and all the based stuff will move to other bases in Europe. Two squadrons of F35 will be based at Lakenheath.
Currently 5 squadrons at Lakenheath so a sizeable reduction assuming no F15 retained.
Wont be any military left anywhere soon.

It appears in the not so distant future the UK will have no worthwhile deterrant force or defence of our own or our Allies. If Mildenhall ceases to function it will be a massive loss to not only spotters but more importantly the local finances and business concerns.

A few years ago Marshall's of Cambridge wanted to move to Mildenhall or at least part of there business, obviously it was occupied and a move to Wyton was a possibility. All this because Cambridge council wants to use Teversham as building land. So it would cause me no surprise whatsoever if Marshall's moved into Mildenhall. As they say watch this space. There were also plans some time back after the USAF pulled out to use Alconbury for a freight airport as it is close to major roads & the rail network, this came to nought apparently because of opposition from the local area, despite the amount of jobs that would have been created.
