The Fokker F-27 and Fairchild FH-227
This “Type Review” was commenced in 2011, and recently discovered while ‘cleaning up’ my MS Word stored document file. One of the last to be started this review of all F-27 and FH-227 aircraft visiting Liverpool, research has only completed the first stage – the listing all the aircraft that visited each year. At that stage it stalled as I moved onto other themes, with very little annual detail added. As I don’t see myself returning to this type in the short term, I thought that there would be no harm in posting ‘as is’, if only to get others to ‘hang’ a few photos of Friendships onto this thread. There is much to choose from with over 50 years of visits by a wide variety of aircraft and airlines, passenger and freight.

Friendship Operations at Liverpool Airport
Spanning over 50 years: 1958 - 2011
Spanning over 50 years: 1958 - 2011
The Friendship is one of a small elite of passenger carrying aircraft types that have visited Liverpool Airport for a period of over 50 years, joining the Dakota, Dove, Dragon Rapide and Hercules. Airlines that have used the type on Liverpool scheduled services, Aer Lingus, British Midland, Manx Airlines and Euroceltic, while others such as Air UK, Skyways Cargo and Channel Express have flown on the night mail ‘spokes from Speke’, then others on freight charters for TNT and the motor companies. This makes for a particularly long history.
My own first flight was as a 10 year-old, on an Aer Lingus Friendship EI-AKG on 16th August 1961 from Speke to Dublin into a stormy headwind, with more vertical movement than horizontal! The Friendship became my personal favourite aircraft type to fly in as passenger, in no small part due to the huge passenger windows without wings and engines blocking the view out.

2012 none
2013 none
It is now 2023 and it now highly unlikely that we will see a Fokker Friendship at Liverpool Airport again.
