Worringly "certain elements" on here will be happy to support a government which would lay down and probably surrender if the IOM threatened to intrude our sovreignty. Nearly every country and Governements in Europe are seriously concerned, as is the USA about the actions of Russia and Putin and is as concerned about the lack of British Military capabilities and available resources. There are some of the Loyalast British people living in the S.Atlantic who have a genuine fear that Labour with or without the Lib Dems will feed them to the dogs and give the Islands over to Argentina IF they (god forbid) get into office.

We need to be very careful here. Its more than just a game. Referring to Putin,Jake3 mentions the similarity with the rise of Hitler and the Nazis. When we heard yesterday, and admission by Putin that the annexation of Crimea was planned some time ago, better take note. Dissent in Russia is not tolerated .... or else!
This is a very dangerous man. The EU wooing of The Ukraine ( more meddling where it was not justified..) was an excellent pre text for his actions. We should be concentrating on building our defences in our home countries. We should not be concerning ourselves with a European Army to oppose Russia in the Ukraine. Another one of those crack pot ideas that came out of Brussels yesterday!

And to add oil in the fire the good old House Of Lords has this week passed a ruling to make legal the continued flood of money into foreign aid. They then refused to do the same with the Defence Expenditure. Who`s side are these morons on ?

There is a good article written in the latest issue of Radio User which covers the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission based at the Lithuanian Air Base Siauliai.
The incoming units from Italy and Poland which replace the Canadian and Protuguese currently in office, has been initially replaced with Typhoons from Italian Air Force. followed by Mig-29 from Polands 23rd Tactical Air Base.
It seems that tension is high due to Russia probing Baltic areas with either IL-76 transport aircraft but more sinister are the visits by IL-20M aircraft Nato Code name "COOT" which are used for ELINT missions.

Let them "probe" over international airspace and up to border lines all they like if they want to use their a/c hours and fuel and need the training. After all we, ie NATO, have been doing this for a very long time. The time to worry is when " someone" does something stupid and releases some sort of weapon. Then it gets serious.
IMO all this simply stems from the Russian sense of inferiority vis a vis the West stemming from their backwardness and small population( around 140 million nowadays)If it wasn't for their nuclear arsenal they would be nothing in World terms. They clearly crave the "great" days of the old USSR when they counted for something in the World .The burden on their tax-producing population in order to defend such a collosal land mass must be enormous.
If "we" wish to get serious over sanctions we should ,immediately, ban supply of any parts/spares/support etc for all Airbus and Boeing types used in Russia. Now that would have a real effect on their economy.Next step, cutting off diplomatic relations by all EU an NATO states.
All depends how serious you want to get in the end.

I have to agree to a certain degree that Putin is engaged in serious sabre rattling, however the big problem is that he has been and continues to spend megga bucks on building his military power, he has refurbished most of the many Bear aircraft which are now back in use with newly trained crews. The naval fleet makes the RN look like an insignificant nuisance probably and the closure of air bases along with the disbanding and scrapping of British Squadrons and aircraft just increases the visual weakness of the UK.
Not forgetting that most of the Gas supplies Britain had an excess of was sold off to Russia years ago who now control its flow back to numerous countries.
The coming election hopefulls need to understand that the voting population is sick and tired of politicians neglecting the security of Britain, its borders and protectorates.
