All times are quoted as ‘local’ time, so are GMT/UTC + 1 hour.  As the source material is in UTC, an error by one hour is possible, but hopefully very infrequent.																								
G/A refers to an aircraft that did not land, performing a go-around only, but did not touch down. t&g is 'touch and go'.																								
The registrations of aircraft operating on call-signs, especially RAF aircraft on Go-Around are not always 100% accurate.  Where a code and direction of Go-Around are given, this means that the registration was confirmed by Mk.1 eyeball (well, usually a digital image!).																								
Where an aircraft operated on call-sign, this is noted by official 2 or 3-letter abbreviation. If there is no call-sign, then the aircraft operated using the registration.  Where there is just one call-sign, the same flight number was used both in- and out-bound.

'Football related' or 'Aintree races' comments are generally determined by the times and point of origin/destination and is guesswork, not absolute known fact.																								
The source material does not name non-registered airfield sites, these are covered by the blanket term ‘private site’. Nor does it identify diverted flights or the reason for the diversion, however these can usually be worked out from other sources.  'WX' = literally 'weather closed', 'Dvt' = diverted in

The genesis of this code/call-sign/operator listing comes from my frustration at decoding the ICAO and IATA codes when producing the monthly review of activity. Every code used in the first four months of 2015 has been included, so the list is very LJLA centric. I have used an ICAO list dated January 2012 and the internet - even so there are a few which still defy identification. Airband users might find the call-sign section of the list useful.

AIRPORT AND AIRLINE DEVELOPMENTS

THOMSON AND FIRST CHOICE TO RETURN IN 2016

Big news for 2016 is the return of regular inclusive tour flights to LJLA. Thomson and First Choice are offering holidays based on Palma de Majorca for summer 2016 aimed primarily but not exclusively at the cruise market. Flights will operate weekly on Tuesdays, commencing 3rd May 2016 using Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Although inclusive holidays are currently available from Liverpool, they utilise seats on EasyJet and Ryanair. The return of Thomson aircraft to the apron at Liverpool is a welcome move.

RIGA AND ZANTE – NEW DESTINATIONS

Hard on the heels of Bacau in March, come a further two new destinations in April.

First, on Thursday 23rd came Easyjet’s weekly flight to Zante/Zakinthos operated by A.319 G-EZFN which departs early afternoon and returns late evening. The following day WizzAir commenced their twice weekly, Friday and Monday service from Riga using HA-LWP on the first service, operating in mid evening. One hopes that both these destinations will be popular to the extent of requiring an increase in capacity next year.

CZECH AIRLINES

Czech, initially intended to commence their new route to Prague in late May, however in mid-April it became clear that the airline had delayed the start until July 3rd. Hopefully this additional time will give time for word of the new destination to spread.

TERMINAL INTERNAL CHANGES

The winter refurbish, relocation and changes to retail and food outlets airside is now drawing to a end, with a number of the projects reaching conclusion.

The good news is that the monthly figures are better than 2014 by a margin. The increase for April is stated to be around 5% over last year. A trend likely to continue for the rest of the year given new routes and operators.

SCHEDULED SERVICE AIRCRAFT

EASYJET (U2/EZY)

Hesitant as to how much detail to go into here, bear in mind that what is being related shows an airline working hard to ensure good service to passengers through shuffling aircraft and crews around, reacting to problems in the network.

Sunday 5th. A.320 G-EZWL as EZY7096 left for Innsbruck 0648, but due to snow diverted to Munich. So instead of returning at 1145, did not get back to LJLA until 2321.

Monday 6th. G-EZIZ arriving on EZY7122 from Alicante in the early hours diverted to Manchester due fog at Liverpool, positioned to LJLA as EZY9001 at 0629 ready for a first wave departure. IoM flight did not operate due fog at IoM all day and into the next.

Tuesday 7th. A.320 G-EZWL on EZY7122 from Alicante in the early hours diverted to Manchester due fog at Liverpool, however the positioning flight was delayed and EZY9004 held for a while before landing at LJLA 0959, so a slight ‘knock-on’ for some flights during the day. G-EZFY was brought over from Manchester as EZY9006 at 1321, only to return to Manchester as EZY9007 at 1610 having not been used. At 1649 G-EZBC operated an extra flight to the Isle of Man to clear ‘blacklog’ passengers as EZY9933, returning as EZY9934 at 1829. The aircraft then departed to the IoM again as EZY9002 at 1901 to operate a IoM-Gatwick ‘backlog’ flight, only to return to LJLA at 1942 due to further fog closing IoM.

Sunday 26th. G-EZBL left on EZY7023 for Jersey at 1316, only to return to Liverpool at 1508 due to the weather at Jersey. Monday 27th an additional flight, also by G-EZBL to Jersey at 0820, back at Liverpool 1046, with the passengers stranded the day before.

Thursday 30th G-EZGK departed to Edinburgh 1836 as EZY9006 presumably due an ‘aircraft on ground’, returned to LJLA as EZY9007 0021 on 1st May.

Although the training was performed away from Liverpool, the training aircraft overnighted here. On Tuesday 21st G-EZDZ arrived from Doncaster-Sheffield at 1631 as EZY9095. The following day it returned to DSA, back at Liverpool again early evening, where it operated a Belfast rotation. On Thursday morning it left for more training at Newquay. A week later and G-EZAT arrived from Chateauroux on Tuesday 18th. On the Wednesday it left for Chateauroux in the morning, returning from DSA in the evening. Overnight there was an aircraft swop at Liverpool, so on Thursday 20th morning it was G-EZIH that left for further training, this time at Prestwick.

RYANAIR (FR/RYR)

By comparison a much easier month to describe alterations to regular schedule. On Tuesday 7th morning fog at LJLA caused 3 Ryanair inbound flights to divert away, all to Leeds Bradford. Flight affected were RYR442 from Dublin (EI-EMC), RYR9885 from Derry (EI-DHP) and RYR8929 from Malta (EI-EFC). All three eventually arrived at Liverpool around midday, EI-EMC and EI-DHP then soon operated out with delayed passengers, while EI-EFC returned to Malta with its passengers. On Thursday 16th EI-DAD arrived from Dublin as RYR833X at 1217 (a DUB-Edinburgh flight), then departed back to Dublin at 1316 as RYR687 (which appears to be a winter Barcelona-DUB flight number!). Quite why the flight operated is unlikely to become clear. On Monday 20th two Ryanairs diverted into Liverpool due to temporary closure of Manchester, both aircraft flew across to Manchester after over an hour at Liverpool (see Diversions section for more detail).

FLYBE (BE/BEE)

Weather and aircraft shortages caused a few disruptions to scheduled operations during April. To the Isle of Man first, with mention that the additional, second Saturday morning rotation from the Island commenced on the 11th. On Monday 6th weather in the IoM prevented all three rotations from operating, while the first rotation on Tuesday 7th was prevented due to fog at LJLA. A very bad period for Isle of Man travellers as there were serious problems with the ferry services as well. Flybe did not put on a larger aircraft or extra flights to clear the Liverpool passenger backlog as they did for Manchester and Birmingham. The afternoon rotation on Wednesday 29th was cancelled possibly due to an aircraft shortage.

The Belfast City service also suffered a few alterations to regular operation. On Wednesday 1st G-JECK arrived on the lunch-time service, but did not operate outbound (eventually positioned out to Belfast City the following morning) and the late evening Belfast City rotation was cancelled, however a larger ERJ-175 was used the following morning. On Monday 6th the first rotation may have been affected by fog at Belfast, and the following day it did operate but held for quite a while as foggy conditions improved at Liverpool. Later in the month, possibly due to an aircraft shortage, the early evening rotation was cancelled on Tuesday 28th along with the first rotation the following morning.

The Isle of Man aircraft is generally (but not always) the same one that operates the two afternoon/evening rotations and the first rotation the following day. Each day the Belfast City rotations are frequently all operated by different aircraft, although at the start of the month the second and third rotations (or first and second on a Saturday) were sometimes the same aircraft. On 10 occasions, on weekdays, the first Belfast rotation aircraft then reappeared at LJLA on the afternoon and evening IoM rotations .

In all 37 different Dash 8s were seen at LJLA in April and 3 ERJs. 37 Dash 8s is only 7 short of the current fleet before the additional aircraft arrive from the USA.

WIZZAIR (W6/WZZ)

Another smooth month, with all flights operating. On the morning that LJLA had fog, the Gdansk flight had to hold briefly as conditions improved sufficiently for an approach and landing.

With the introduction of the summer ’14 schedules at the very end of March, there are now 3 flights per week from both Gdansk and Warsaw, both on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with Gdansk in the morning and Warsaw in the evening. To this, since Friday 24th April, has been added Riga on a Friday and Monday, with the inaugural flight operated by HA-LWP.

Blue Air also had a smooth month, using a mix of Boeing 737-300 and -400 aircraft. Bucharest operates morning of Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Bacau late evening Saturday and Tuesday.

CHARTERS, TOURS & FREIGHT OPERATIONS

As we transition from winter into summer, not all the charter flights in April were sport generated. A charter was operated by Gain Jet’s Boeing 757-200 SX-RFA on Thursday 2nd taking a private party out to St. Thomas in the American Virgin Islands for a week, returning in the early hours of Friday 10th. Being in a low capacity VIP fit, there was no problem in departing Liverpool direct to the Caribbean. Another private party charter was operated by Cello Avn, using BAe.146-200 G-RAJJ on Tuesday 14th shortly before midday routing through from Dublin to Glasgow. First of what will be a short season of Spanish student charter flights arrived early afternoon of Friday 24th from Valladolid on an Evelop Airlines flight, operated by Alba Star Boeing 737-400 EC-LAV.

Between them EFC and LFC played 10 FA Cup and Premiership games during April, of these 5 generated passenger charter aircraft. Early evening of Friday 3rd LFC used Cello Avn’s BAe.146 G-RAJJ as transport to Luton for an away an Arsenal, returning home the following evening. The same weekend Southampton FC arrived for their game at Goodison on Air X of Malta’s Boeing 737-300 9H-OME early evening Friday 3rd, departing early evening the following day. The following weekend saw EFC leaving for Cardiff on BMRegional ERJ-145 G-RJXM late afternoon Friday 10th to play Swansea, returning home Saturday evening. Newcastle FC arriving at LJLA on BMRegional ERJ-145 G-EMBJ Sunday evening 12th and returned home just after midnight, the early minutes of Tuesday 14th. Finally Liverpool FC flew home from Stansted after their FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley on Sunday 19th evening on Titan’s Boeing 737-300 G-ZAPX.

If March was poor for freight flights, April was worse with just a single Metro IV of Bin Air, D-CPSE arriving from Ostrava late afternoon, Wednesday 1st. The Beluga on Sunday 12th only counts as a diversion as no freight dropped off or collected.

DIVERSIONS – GAINS & LOSSES

Pilots (and airports) seem to be inventing ever more new reasons for diverting aircraft away. Earlier this year it was a Police helicopter operating in the approach to Dublin Airport, last month failure of both primary and back-up power to the ILS at Manchester. This month a drone sighted by landing pilots caused serious disruption for 40 minutes at Manchester; while at Blackpool a problem with security clearing outbound passengers forced outbound flights to operate through LJLA for a week. Couple that with morning fog and a French ATC 48 hour strike, and April was not a good month for passengers.

Firstly, the aircraft diverting into Liverpool. On Sunday 12th cross winds at Hawarden forced Beluga flight F-GTSB/2 to divert into Liverpool, positioning across to Chester the next morning in much quieter conditions. Second time already this year that a Beluga has diverted to LJLA.

A strange one on Thursday 16th as Ryanair's Boeing 737-8AS EI-DAD arrived from Dublin as RYR833X at 1217 (a DUB-Edinburgh flight), then departed back to Dublin at 1316 as RYR687 (which appears to be a winter Barcelona-DUB flight number!). Quite why the flight operated into Liverpool is unlikely to become clear.

On Monday 20th pilots landing at Manchester reported sighting a RPV drone in the approach. The Police helicopter was summoned and arriving aircraft put into the hold. With no clear indication as to when the issue would be resolved and the queue developing in the hold start landing, a number of pilots made the decision to divert and wait-out the problem on the ground elsewhere. First into Liverpool was Icelandair with Boeing 757 TF-LLX, followed by two Ryanairs, an EasyJet and a Flybe Dash 8. Another EasyJet opted to divert to EMA. Manchester was closed for some 40 minutes, with the Dash 8 landing at Liverpool just as Manchester re-opened! The diverted aircraft were on the ground at Liverpool between an hour and two hours, it is thought that they kept their passengers aboard then ferried them across to Manchester, except for the Flybe which deplaned the passengers and returned empty to Southampton to keep near to schedule and not inflict ‘knock-on’ delays to passengers on flights later in the day.

The reason why Citywings/Van Air Europe flights from Blackpool to the Isle of Man operated from Liverpool for 8 days was never made clear. It is thought that a problem in CAA approval of departing passenger security arrangements at Blackpool may be the reason that from Wednesday 22nd, three weeks after recommencing flights between IoM and Blackpool, Citywings flew their twice daily service from the IoM to Blackpool, unloaded, then positioned empty to LJLA while the passengers followed by road to board the aircraft for their flight to the Isle of Man. Clearly this compromise arrangement was not ideal for the passengers – but for Liverpool brought in 15 rotations operated by the LET-410, with all 3 current aircraft OK-ASA, OK-LAZ and OK-RDA involved.

At LJLA there was considerable disruption as both Ryanair and EasyJet cancelled a number of services to France, Spain and Portugal on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th due to a 48 hour strike by French ATC. Coming in the peak week following Easter this was not good news for returning British travellers, but affected all British Airports.

Fog though on two mornings caused a headache for airlines and delays to passengers at Liverpool. Fog formed overnight Sunday 5th into Monday 6th, however only the last inbound, an EasyJet A.319 G-EZFL on EZY7122 from Alicante in the early hours, had to divert to Manchester. All the first rotation got away without problems, as EasyJet had an extra aircraft at Liverpool overnight and the fog was already thinning by the time of the first arrivals, although both first rotation Flybes did not operate. Fog again formed overnight Monday 6th into Sunday 7th and again the last of the day’s inbounds EZY7122 from Alicante, operated by A320 G-EZWL in the early hours diverted into Manchester. The fog cleared slower and affected the early inbounds, although the majority of the first wave outbounds got away smoothly. After holding, some flights for upto an hour, the Flybe Dash 8 from Belfast City landed at 0949 followed by EasyJet’s G-EZWL positioning from Manchester to operate out to Naples, and EasyJet’s first Belfast rotation and their flight from Amsterdam. By 1030 and the arrival of the WizzAir from Gdansk the fog was thinning and by 1100 gone completely. However the Flybe Isle of Man early rotation did not operate and three Ryanairs diverted away after holding. All went to Leeds/Bradford, but took their time coming back, presumably still with passengers aboard. Flights affected were FR442 EI-EMC from Dublin, FR8929 EI-EFC (non-based) from Malta and FR9885 EI-DHP from Derry. All three returned to LJLA from LBA just before 1200, so there were knock-on delays for some Ryanair passengers for the rest of the day.

TRAINING

Apart from aircraft using the ILS to go-around, there were no training flights during April. Although they did not fly circuits at Liverpool, EasyJet did overnight their crew training/validation aircraft at Liverpool, which is covered in the EasyJet section.

BIZ-JET VISITORS

Despite the Aintree Grand National meeting during April, the number of different biz Jets and registration nationalities were both down by nearly a third to 38 aircraft of 10 nationalities when compared to March. While there were Challengers, a Falcon 7X, Gulfstreams ,Lear Jets and the whole family of Citations, there were also some Hawker 800 series, a type missing in recent months.

No Legacies in April, but there were Challengers G-SJSS, G-RADY and the most notable, 9H-CLG on Friday 17th and Sunday 19th. Two Gulfstreams, with G650 EI-JSK here for the duration of the Aintree Race Meeting and G4 N845GS from Milan on Tuesday 28th. A further Falcon 7X visit brought in M-LJGI from and to Dublin on Thursday 23rd. Other non-Citation biz-jets were three NetJets Hawker 750/800s over Grand National weekend (although this may have only been co-incidence) with CS-DRV, CS-DUC and CS-DUF. Lear Jet 45 visitors in April featured Ryanair’s M-ABEU on Saturday 4th and LX-ONE on an air ambulance flight Saturday 25th from Alicante; with smaller Lear Jet 25A D-CAPO likely also on air ambulance flights on Sunday 12th from Vigo and Friday 17th from Malaga and Lear Jet 31 D-CPRO from Naples to Cologne on Thursday 23rd.

Some 23 of the 38 biz-jets calling in April were Citations. Globe Air of Austria had one or other of their Cessna 510 Mustangs here for most of the month, with OE-FNP, OE-FZC and OE-FZA. The others all being British with Blink’s G-FLBK and G-FBKE, London Executive’s G-LEAA and G-LEAB, although Aviation Beauport’s regular G-XAVB called just the once. Indeed for a short time on Friday 21st there were 4 of the breed on the ground at the same time (OE-FZA, G-FBKE, G-LEAB and G-XAVB). There was just the one Citation 550 Bravo with YU-BZZ to Palermo on Friday 3rd. The Cessna 525 CitationJets comprised of M-FLYI on Friday 10th, G-YEDC on Friday 10th, YU-MTU from Sion on Monday 13th, D-IEKU on Saturday 25th and Thursday 30th and finally G-SONE on Sunday 26th. Most numerous Citation mark was the 560XL with 8 examples. G-EYUP, G-OJER, G-DEIA, G-RSXL and LX-INS are all reasonably regular, joined by NetJets CS-DXK on Sunday 12th, YU-SMK and D-IEKU on Saturday 25th and Thursday 30th in a most attractive scheme. Finally the current largest member of the Citation family, a 680 Sovereign D-CEIS on Sunday 5th and night stopped.

No sign of the Blackpool based Book-a-Jet Premiers (well one is damaged at present), so M-GDRS was the only Premier of the month, calling 3 times. Phenom M-YTOY , which has been absent for a while, returned on Tuesday 14th departing for Berlin, returning from there the following day.

GENERAL AVIATION VISITORS

Executive twins were dominated by King Air aircraft. Most of the British ones are regulars with G-ERSE, G-MEGN, G-ORTH, G-BYCP, G-PCOP, G-SASC, M-SPOR and G-FSEU appearing in April. Of note are ‘Enzo’ King Air 90 G-ORTH (a LJLA resident a few years ago) on Saturday 4th ; G-FSEU King Air 200 on Sunday 26th, along with Gama Aviation’s all yellow G-SASC on Thursday 16th and Manx registered M=SPOR on Tuesday 21st. Just the one European registered King Air 200, HB-GLB on Tuesday 23rd, while two elderly American King Air A.90s arrived on Tuesday 7th and night stopped. N87E is a former Beech U-21A 66-18004 and N95S once a Beech RU-21H 70-15891, both are used for survey work, indeed N95S has called at LJLA before on 4.9.14. In the 1980s US Army Beech U-21As such as 18014 and 18021 were regular visitors to Speke, but 18004 doesn’t appear to have visited here while in Army service. Cranfield University’s Jetstream 31 G-NFLA operated from Liverpool for several days Tuesday 7th until Thursday 9th, Cobham’s Twin Star G-COBS on Friday 17th and IoM based Aztec G-CALL add to the visiting twins. With Capital Trading, their G-VIPU operated the IoM hospital contract smoothly during April, although with visits less frequent than during March. Another of their Navajos, G-VIPW, called twice on Wednesday 22nd from Exeter to Stornoway and again on the return flight.

Of the GA and air taxis singles, no turboprop powered Malibu or TBM-700 series visited in April, so directly onto piston powered GA types. A distinct lack of European registered singles, but there were a number of American registered with N78DU a Bonanza G.36 on Sunday 5th and night stopped, Cirrus N821CC twice on Tuesday 21st Cambridge-Moenchengladbach and return on Saturday 25th, with Garey, IoM strip based N182K on Thursday 23rd, fitted with soft field ‘tundra’ tyres. Guernsey registered aircraft are still few and far between, so it is interesting to record visits by 2-MIKE a Commander 114B on Thursday 9th and 2-LOVE an A.36 Bonanza on Friday 10th. A greater than usual variety of British singles, although most have been before in the 12 months. Unlike last month there was variety, not just Pipers! Cessna 182Q G-NLEE f&t Blackbushe on Friday 10th and Cessna F172N G-CGRX f&t a private strip on Saturday 11th were very likely connected with the Aintree Race Meeting, while another Cessna 182T G-CGKY on Thursday 16th also visited from a private strip. Piper designs were a Cherokee Arrows G-BXYT on Friday 10th from & to Biggin Hill and G-GPMW on Saturday 18th, with three Cherokees G-CLEA, G-EHAZ and G-SNUZ flying together from Kemble to the Isle of Man. Finally mention of Cirrus SR.22 G-ZRZZ f&t Blackbushe on Friday 17th and TB-20 Trinidad G-TBSV on Thursday 23rd f&t Abbeysrhule

There were more mid-size executive helicopter this month compared to March. Regulars were Bell 427 M-YMCM and Sikorsky G-PACO, irregulars were EI-GJL Dauphin on Monday 27th and twice the following day, and A.109s G-GRND Monday 13th and G-MUZZ on Thursday 23rd. Ecureuil/Squiirels were all familiar with G-GMCM, G-SPVK and PLM Dollar’s G-NLDR. Robinson R.44/66s were regulars G-CEKA, G-CFNF, G-SYES and a new one, D-HXXY arriving from Booker Monday 27th and stayed for a week.

RESIDENT AIRCRAFT ACTIVITY AND CHANGES

One new arrival is Cherokee Arrow G-BXYO, which has been moved from Blackpool by its owner on Saturday 11th and has been active several times since. A resident currently missing is Moss Aviation’s King Air 90 9H-MOS which was last at Liverpool 19th March and has been at Oxford since, no doubt it will return shortly. During April Citabria G-BFHP flew for the first time this year on Friday 24th and again Wednesday 29th.

Mooney M.20F G-BIWR, which has been temporally resident in the past, arrived from Sleap 27th March, flew to Barton and back on 9th, then returned to Sleap 16th, so clearly not stopping long this time. Another former resident, Cherokee Arrow G-BVYS returned on Thursday 23rd, most likely for maintenance work, as has Woodvale based Cherokee G-BTFO arriving Tuesday 7th.

Helicentre’s Robinsons G-CJLL and G-OBIO have been active. Visiting Helicentre have been R.44s G-CEKA and G-CFNF, along with Robinson R.66 G-SYES, and most interesting of all R.44 D-HXXY here for a week at the end of the month. They picked-up business during the Aintree Race meeting, with a single morning trip by Robinson R.44 G-OGJC ‘National 40’ on Thursday 9th; then two trips by EC.120B G-OMEM to/from Aintree as ‘National 24’ and single trip by R.44 G-OJGC as ‘National 40’ on Friday 10th; with 4 round trips by G-OMEM again as ‘National 24’ on the Saturday and one trip by Robinson R.44 G-JCLL.

MILITARY AIRCRAFT VISITORS

After a couple of reasonable months of activity, not a single military aircraft or helicopter touched down during April – very disappointing. However military aircraft were active on go-around, they are covered in their own section.

GO-AROUND ACTIVITY

A fairly active month, although involving only routine types. Hawks appeared on 17 occasions, the majority T.2s, along with King Air 200 on 5. There was increase in Tornado aircraft, but no Typhoons in April. The Tornados being 2 on Thursday 23rd with ZA607/EB-X in full 41 Sqdn marks at 1108 and Marham Wing ZA412/- with 617 70th anniversary tail at 1825, with a further two on Tuesday 28th with ZD749/105 at 1706 and ZA412/- again at 1714, with singleton ZG750 at 1745 on Thursday 30th. A single Hercules C.4 ZH867 twice on Saturday 25th shortly before 1700 and again at 1718 before going onto the Isle of Man.

Grob G.115s from Woodvale are now rare sightings, however G-CGKV did a go-around on Saturday morning 11th. Sole Police helicopter using the ILS to go-around was North Wales Police G-NWOI on Tuesday 14th. All white King Air 350 G-LBSB performed a practise ILS and go-around while en route to Newquay on Tuesday 14th.

EPILOGUE

A fairly routine month. As for highlights, well the Boeing 757s of Icelandair on diversion and GainJet direct out to the Caribbean on a charter stand out, as does the Evelop inbound charter using a Alba Star Boeing 737-400. Another Beluga visit on diversion is always worth a mention, as is the Air X Malta Boeing 737-300 on a football charter. Grand National Day is now nearly a non-event at the Airport. Finally two new destinations in Riga and Zante should not pass without another mention, nor should the news of Thomson returning in 2016.
