Just found my ticket stubs etc from a flight Manchester to Alicante in Sept 1979, what was very interesting was that I seem to remember that our flight was one of the last out before Manchester went on strike, as it was my 1st ever flight I seem to recall we took off at approx 10.30, our return flight 10 days later landed in East Midlands, can anyone confirm the date of the strike and what was diverted to Liverpool for the duration of the strike, time plays tricks with mind has you get older but I sure it was a Friday and the Airlines was Britannia and the Aircraft was a B737,
thanks.

The strike started on Friday, 7th September 1979 in the early afternoon (the folders with times in is in store at present) and lasted for 16 days until 22nd September and was a continuation of a unofficial dispute over pay differentials by 34 Fire Service Officers that had closed Manchester in April 1979.
Around 550 airline flights diverted to Liverpool, with 27 airlines of 19 registration nationalities and with 19 aircraft types. 39 inbound wide-body flights used Liverpool during the strike period - B.747, DC-10, A.300 of CP Air, Wardair, BA, Laker, TIA, Martinair (op for BY) and TEA (op for BY).
Just before midnight on Friday 7th G-BGNW Boeing 737 arrived from Alicante on BY059B and just after midnight G-AVRO on BY061B - did you fly out on BY059A or BY061A??
