Time for a few comments and analysis of the helicopter aspect of the 2016 Grand National Day. The day started cool but bright for the few who don't learn the lesson from previous years and arrive a long time before any action and the majority arrive. Later in the morning it clouded over but visibility remained very clear; but by midday there were lots of breaks and interesting cloudscapes in the background. The breeze was light, with adrift from the south West, so landings were on 27, parallel to the fence and passed close in front of us - as can be seen from the photos. With only a light breeze, it felt warmer than the day actually was. We had left long before the heavy, cold shower of rain that fell on Aintree mid-afternoon. I didn't count the number of enthusiasts gathered this year, but it was around the 15 mark. The prize for the longest distance travelled goes to a recent nwan member who came up from London, staying at Blackpool. He has also visited the helicopter race-meeting fly-ins at Ascot and Cheltenham, and while Aintree does not compete in terms of numbers, I think he enjoyed the gathered company and the unobstructed view of the descending helicopters. Police presence was low-key this year, with just the one visit from security early on, after which they were noticeable by their complete absence. A new distraction this year was taking part in looking for the parents of a young child who had got separated from his parents in the adjoining woodland and found a dog walker and us instead! The lad was safely re-united with his dad after a short search. Although the first arrivals were at 1000, visiting helicopter activity proper did not get under-way until around 1100 this year. By 1pm the number of different helicopters seen was up from 19 (plus the Police helicopter) last year to 22 (plus the Police EC.135) this year. The number of shuttle flights was down, so the number of arrivals was down from 37 to 31. Unusually, none of the helicopters, apart from those involved in the 'shuttle' of passengers or photography, departed during the morning. Looking at the lists for Thursday and Friday, over the three days although there is some daily repetition, a good proportion of helicopters visit on one day only. Makes it worthwhile next year going there for more than just the Saturday morning, weather permitting. Yet again, the Saturday evening brought in a couple of helicopters not present during the morning. Good see a greater number of non-British registered helicopters, and the return of a larger helicopter in the form of the AW.139 - a reminder of the Bond Puma a few years back. In summary, a most enjoyable year: weather, variety and number of helicopters along with the company of those gathered.
