I wonder if anyone knows approximate numbers of fans who have travelled in or out of Liverpool for the various football airlifts over the years? eg - Rome, Athens, Istanbul.
I know that Liverpool v St Etienne 16 March 1977 pax total (in&out) was 5,087 (Night of the Caravelles)

No totals but the aircraft types/airlines involved and now well illustrated, for Rome 1977 are listed on: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/17375/airlift-rome-1977-european-finalAn overlooked fans airlift, European qualifier game Ireland v Holland at Anfield 1995. derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/16981/euro-qualify-anfield-ireland-hollandAnother event outside the remit of FoLA's question, and one which produced very few movements were the 1966 World Cup games played at Goodison Park. derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/3452Again, outside of the answer to FoLA's question, the first European match to bring not only a number of charters, but a wide variety of types too. Well illustrated, Ajax fans arriving for the Anfield game on 14th December 1966. derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/23364/years-ajax-14th-december-1966Comparison of LFC and EFC finals played in Brussels and Rotterdam, both May 1985. Also now well illustrated. derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/15237/european-football-finals-airlifts-imagesIncludes seats available calculated, so should help 'FoLA'. A May 2018 addition to the Football threads on nwan forum, this covering the March 1977 invasion by St. Etienne fans: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/28395/airlift-etienne-fans-march-1977Includes a list of all aircraft and many photographs. I've found a reference in Dave Graham's monthly movement report for May 2007 of "around 12,000 supporters passed through Liverpool Airport for Athens" Which leaves Istanbul 2005 outstanding - I cannot yet find a reference in the nwan magazine of the time to an estimate of the number of fans that passed through the Airport May 2005.

Looking around for previous posts on this forum to help answer "FoLA's" question reminded me that there is no thread, or series of threads detailing LFC and EFC's Cup Final exploits in Europe and associated fan's airlifts. Both the Istanbul and Athens finals were covered in depth on Dave Graham's nwan website, but the accounts were lost when he 'pulled the plug' and have never been replicated on nwan forum. Before I start searching the magazines for details, an evening with the lap-top on the internet working out just which years and destinations I need to be looking for. The year is that in which the final was played, although the competition will have started the previous autumn. LIVERPOOL F.C. Year Competition Opponent LFC/EFC's result Location
1966 Cup Winner's Cup Borussia Dortmund (lost) played in Glasgow at Hampden Park
1973 UEFA Cup Borrusia Monchengladbach (won) 2 legs, Anfield & Bokelbergstadium, Monchengladbach
1976 UEFA Cup Brugge KV (won) 2 legs, Anfield & Olympiastadion, Brugge
1977 European Cup Borussia Monchengadbach (won) played in Rome at Stadio Olimpico
1978 European Cup Club Brugge (won) played in London at Wembley Stadium
1981 European Cup Real Madrid (won) played in Paris at Parc des Princes
1984 European Cup Roma (won) played in Rome at Stadio Olimpico
1985 European Cup Juventus (lost) played in Brussels at Heysel Stadium
2001 UEFA Cup Deportivo Alaves (won) played in Dortmund at Westfalenstadion
2005 Champions League AC Milan (won) played in Istanbul at Ataturk Stadium
2007 Champions League AC Milan (lost) played in Athens at the Olympic Stadium
2016 Europa Cup Sevilla FC (lost) played in Basle at St Jacob-Park Stadium EVERTON F.C. 1985 Cup Winner's Cup Rapid Vienna (won) played in Rotterdam at the de Kuip Stadium
Having produced this list of finals appearances in Europe (I've ignored 'one off' game competitions such as European Super Cup and other Cup Winner's clashes), one weakness in looking at major fan's airlifts for finals ignores that there have been a number of years where earlier rounds produced more significant airlifts of fans, Ajax and St Etienne immediately come to mind in the '70s. Added later on 'edit':LIVERPOOL AIRPORT, FOOTBALL and AIRCRAFT, 1962-1985Largely inspired by putting together this post and realising little has ever been written, bringing together much information and images about all the aircraft involved with LFC and EFC in European competitions over the years. It has taken a while, but I have brought together a great deal of information on a detailed, long thread: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/28359/liverpool-airport-football-aircraft-1962I have tried, as far as is possible from records gathered at the time, to list every aircraft with teams and fans that has used Liverpool Airport in the pre-Heysel period of EFC and LFC in Europe - which includes 9 of finals listed above. THIS THREAD HAS BEEN REPLACED BY ANOTHER MORE RECENT ONE. For much more on LFC and EFC in European Competition, plus links to not only the threads covered here but many newer ones:
