Rather belatedly I can't add much to the excellent photos already posted, but you might like to see the ones I took on Tuesday 4th of LN-WND coming back in on one; LN-WND, Duxford, 4 June 19 (2) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr LN-WND, Duxford, 4 June 19 (4) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr LN-WND, Duxford, 4 June 19 (7) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr LN-WND, Duxford, 4 June 19 (9) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr He landed safely, although the good one was obviously pulling hard. However what surprised me was the way he manouvered overhead to come curving in with the dead engine on the outside of the curve. My understanding (from childhood Biggles books) is that you should always turn towards the dead engine? Any coments from our aviator members?

Hi
I’ve still got images to post from here, can’t seem to find the time at the moment
From your shots you can’t have been far away from me, pity the weather was a bit grim
I thought LN-WND made quite a few tight turns before landing on one engine

An update regarding my earlier question - why was LN-WND turning with the dead engine on the outside of the curve? LN-WND, Duxford, 4 June 19 (4) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr I've now spoken with an ex-ATCO who knows the answer - it's safer! The normal wisdom is that you should turn towards the dead engine, so you're not fighting against the drag. But on the Dakota the opposite is true because there is more chance of losing control with the dead engine on the inside of the curve, it's a harder balancing act. So it is tougher work to keep the dead engine on the outside of the curve, but rather like having to shove something with your shoulder you can adjust how hard you shove. And why does an ex-ATCO know this - because he was trained to give DC-3s the best course to follow when they were limping home. I wonder how many 'new' ATCOs know how to deal with a DC-3?
