Nice set of images there Ian, very good details on the close ups. The stratotankers HF radio antenna wire can be clearly seen mid tail as is the blade end insulator at the other end, this is where the wire enters the avionics bay behind the cockpit and that is where the antenna tuner unit is. The C-17 has a combined HF wire antenna and self contained tuner unit built into the top tail, but it also has a pair of Ultra HF satellite communications patch antennas on top of the wing fuselage join. These are visible in your c-17 photo. These are a bit "spesh"..and not cheap by any means to swap out but I assume they get damaged by speeding dust/debris knocking them out of the very tight specs ! www.amc.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/786666/mcchord-product-improvement-team-does-away-with-redundant-inspection-of-c-17-an/
