Clearly at one time I stood feet away from barfluer up by the threshold. Clearly Barfleur was in very early from the lack of people. Position of the sun improves as the day goes on, so by the last 'acts' it is really good for landing shots. Lost my logging record part way through the day, so this is a combination of my partial log and the 'Check List'. Puzzles and questions at the end, for others there to answer.R.A.F. Any comments? Were these there, if so whereabouts did I walk past them! Or maybe some were concealed in with the far side fllight lines? The 'check-lists' on sale did not provide location. Also anyone fill-in the very few registration gaps in the list above. Perhaps have confused the Jet Provost locations and the MD.900 registrations up, due to loosing my early loggings?
General CommentsA very enjoyable day out. Sunny weather, with attractive cloudscape, and a gentle breeze. Plenty of aircraft (just over 200 logged), but how over the years European (and our own) military aircraft have been largely replaced by GA civilians in the static parks! Impressive number of Austers lined up though, together with nice groups of WWII vintage Americans. Of the modern aircraft, the 2 Italian F-16s were of interest, as were the Czech contibution. But why were the base's own beautiful preserved Lightning, Phantom and Vulcan parked in out of the way places, are the RAF now ashamed of their Cold War heritage? Barriers were a little close for photography, making taking reasonable shots of the static rather awkward without metal barriers, cones or blue tape.
The flying display highlights were the Vulcan (impressive as always), the Belgian A.330 with 2 x F-16s, 2 x Hunters & 2 x Strikemasters in close formation, probable last time seeing a 'smoking' Nimrod in flight, the Hurricane/Spitfire/'Me.109' set piece towards the end (even though on the way back to the car park at the time), the Typhoon & Spitfire combo, while the 'Turkish Stars' performed well, but with long out of sight-line gaps between passes.
While the compound of 4 UAV 'full-size relicas' was of little direct interest, the relative size was impressive, especially the Global Hawk. When will we start seeing real ones in the static? Ugh! I was way too far away to see much of the UAV flown during the air display - it looked like a radio controlled model from where I was at the runway threshold!
Unless I went to sleep, or the display continued after 5pm, I saw no Harrier, Tucano (did arrive), Hawk (did depart), Grippen or 'Classic Airshow' set-piece perform.
See a later replyThis year I was lucky with the car parking - being placed in an overflow farm field early due to delays in getting the queues onto the airfield. As a result, less than 5 minutes from car start to out on the public road at 5pm - quite a record, especially considering the long stationary queues I had walked past to reach the car!
Anyone found other websites with a decent Waddington check-list for me to compare with mine above? Send me a PM if you have.
