Radio Luxemburg and the DH Dragon

Something prompted me this morning to look the history of radio Luxemburg. Those of you of a certain age like me, will remember "208" as the escape from "The Billy Cotton Band Show" and "Workers Playtime" broadcast by the BBC light programme. I found the history fascinating. Its here for you to read if you want. I did not realise that a lot of the actual material was made in London; recorded and taken over for transmission from Luxemburg. Among the methods of travel was a DH Dragon. There is a picture too.

Yes, like many others on here, I well remember listening to Radio Luxembourg. The TV broadcasting arm, RTL, was very useful as an alternative form of entertainment in the Benelux countries and Germany when I was travelling there regularly. They even showed F1 live (albeit with a German commentary), and very naughty films late at night!

There is mention of Radio Caroline there, and at this point, I can confess that we at Cambrian Airways in Liverpool were instrumental in supporting the station that was anchored off the Isle of Man. Newly pressed records would be delivered to our office in a box with no label on it, and handed to a member of the crew. Equally at the IOM, the anonymous package would be handed to one of the ground staff and then collected from Ronaldsway by person or persons unknown. The whole thing was done on trust and was of course completely illegal, but such was life in those days that no-one made a fuss about it. Our reward for this? We would get a message to them to request a particular record and it would be played with an obscure reference.

Great Story Barry. I flew over and around Radio Caroline vessel once, taking pictures. Hunted high and low recently, and found none. Such is life.
