A new scheme to provide better health care in more rural areas has been "piloted" recently.
Eight doctors who normally work at Dijon were flown to the small town on Nevers, for consultations and limited procedures.
The flight took 35 minutes each way, compared with three hours by road each way, allowing for a full work day. Doctors included general practitioners, a cardiologist, gynaecologist and a pulmonologist.
This service will probably run weekly for at least 7 months. There is a rail service between Dijon and Nevers which takes two hours each way at best, but this will soon be closed for 7 months for repairs.
(Info gathered from the English language newspaper The Connection)
Info. Although we are blessed with super health care in France, the rural areas have seen a gradual decline in the availability of specialist areas of medicine as the newer and younger doctors seem to prefer city life.
