WH291 is the Meteor F.8 recently removed from the SWWAPS collection at Lasham and now in storage at Booker. In its (known) history it first went to 79 Sqn then on to 257 though one source of information says that around the move to 257 it "passed through" 610 Sqn. I am not sure what this means. Did it merely visit for the day on its way or was it allocated to 610 and stay for a bit longer? I would be interested to know if any Forum members have any information or, even better, photographs of WH291 that this aircraft stayed with 610 or even acquired the shark teeth squadron markings. Date would have been the 1950's. Any other photo's of '291 would be appreciated as we are compiling a collection of pics of it in its various guises through the years. After 257 she went on to CAW at Manby, to 85 Sqn target towing and ended her career with 229 OCU before being roaded out of Kemble to Lasham. TIA thepaperplane

Unfortunately, Dave, I can't give precise dates, I only have the destination squadrons.
The SWWAPS web site information on the aircraft says: "As an F.8 entered service with 257 squadron, passing through 610 squadron to the RAF College of Air Warfare in 1957"
The inference there is that it was on the way to the CAW in 1957 and passed through 610 on the way, so 1957 may be the first year to check. That won't be a full year of activity with 610 as it was in '57 that the auxiliary squadrons (including 610) were disbanded. May be that was why it didn't stay?
Was that you giving me a wave in Chester on Monday?

Mike some further info re WH291....one of my pressies off S.Claus was Roger Lindsays excellent book "Cold War Shield" so a search revealed.......
79 Sqn only operated FR.9s( no mention of any F.8s)
WH291 served with 257 from 19/11/51 to 18/6/54 when a wheels up landing resulted in cat 4 damage and a return to Glosters...so I will look at 6/54 until 57 next time I get a chance to look at 610 ORB...... regards Dave

Is this aircraft now on Merseyside somewhere?
Had a phone call from the lad to say he saw a dismantled aircraft on a low loader going down Speke Boulevard first thing this morning. Only identifying mark he could see was WH291 in black lettering.

Sorry, a bit late seeing the previous reply to the thread.
For those of you that don't know, WH291 is now with the Speke Aerodrome Heritage Group at the Crowne Plaza and being restored before reassembly.

There are three threads concerning the arrival of this Meteor at the Crowne Plaza/former Airport Terminal open at one time. One was a daily thread of the EGGP activity section which is now index sheets back. On the other which is in the, possibly more apppropriate, 'Liverpool Memories and History' theme of the 'Nostalia' section there are photos plus a history of the aircraft, expanding greatly on the outline in post 5 above.
