With the inevitable scrapping of the MRA4 having started today. I decided that I would spend the afternoon rumaging through my photographs to see what happier memories of Nimrod at Woodford I could stir. I have only found half a dozen so far and here they are:
XV227 Nimrod MR2 at the 1991 Woodford Air Show. This Nimrod was at one stage fitted with load measuring equipment to gather data for the Fatigue Test Specimen. The fuselage of XV227 was to become MRA4 ZJ521 PA-8.
XV228 Nimrod MR2 arriving on RW25 for the Woodford Air Show in June 1994. It wears 201 Squadron markings on the fin. The fuselage of XV228 was to become MRA4 ZJ523 PA-10.
XV241 Nimrod MR2 parked on the Flight Sheds apron adjacent to where the MRA4 scrapping is taking place. XV241 retained its grey/white scheme whilst in use as an MR2 development aircraft at both Boscombe Down and Woodford. It was photographed in July 1983.
XV255 Nimrod MR2 fitted with ‘Operation Granby’ modifications, consisting of a BOZ pod on a pylon underneath the starboard wing and an underwing FLIR turret. The photo was taken sometime during autumn 1990 whilst ‘255 was on a quick visit from Boscombe Down.
XV263 Nimrod AEW3 at a Woodford ‘Families Day’ in September 1983. I believe this was the only AEW3 to be fitted with a FR probe. I don’t remember how many aircraft were actually delivered to the Trials Unit at Waddo’ but I am pretty sure this was one of them. It finnished its service life at Finningley as a GI airframe.
XZ284 Nimrod MR2 in storage at Woodford in November 2001 wearing 206 Squadron special markings. Its fuselage was to be used for MRA4 ZJ519 PA-6. Maybe some one could confirm this but I think XZ284 was the only new build MR2?
Well that’s it! A few pleasant memories of Nimrods at Woodford on this very sad day. If A.V. Roe knew what was going on at Woodford today he would turn in his grave.
Cheers
Shaun
