Sad that the rescue co-ordination centre, the helis and the CG rescue tug all used in this rescue operation are ALL destined to be scrapped under the defence cuts ? perhaps the ditching coincided with the defense minister visiting the downed aircrafts base at the time it went down. !

Don't get me going on defence cuts - no Nimrod replacements, no Harriers and no Ark Royal. Our defence policy? Every citizen issued with a small white surrender flag on a stick. And the small white flags will, of course, be made in China!!!

I asked this question before....but nobody replied..I'll try again.
What do you think about the fact that the defense of the realm is being sacrificed in order to sustain a corrupt regime far far away, populated by people who would cut our throats whilst we sleep if given half a chance.

RT Well the first thing I'd like to know is what exactly are we doing there? Officially we're supposed to be fighting the taliban and/or training a new Afghan army. The taliban as such seem to be pretty good at linking up a mobile phone and some explosive, and growing poppies, but they're hardly a threat to world security. Looking for Osama bin Laden? There are many senior military people around the world who believe that he is now dead, so there doesn't seem much point in pursuing him. If he is still alive, then he's evaded the world's best security forces for ten years, but the media trot out 'al Qaeda' every time there's anything remotely to do with terrorism. Personally, I'm not really sure why we need all this kit anyway. Who is going to attack us? Russia? They'll be a nuisance, and it's always good to know what Ivan is up to, but the Cold War ended 20 years ago. Iran? Hardly - they no more have WMDs than Iraq was alleged to have. The Falklands? Yes I can see that kicking off again, but we've got a big air base there now for precisely that eventuality. The principal countries of the EU have sent only token forces to Afghanistan. One of the reasons is that they simply don't want to get involved in a war that is not of their making; overall taxes are lower in those countries than they are in the UK, not least because they don't have to pay for all this stuff. Whatever the politicians might like to think, Britain is no longer a major player on the world stage, and good riddance I say. Let's spend the money we raise from our huge taxation on infrastructure and creating sustainable jobs within the UK.

Without the carrier and Harrier capability, we'll not be able to project as much power against any enemy force as we did in during the Falklands conflict, certainly not for the next 10 years at least. If it did "kick off" again down there, at this moment in time, we'd be hard pushed to provde an adequate military response.

It goes a little deeper than merely "fighting the Taliban". The spread of radical sharia controlled fundamentalist is the concern of all free countries, all of which have a duty to stop its spread. Cost is a problem, but what is the alternative? Research this week admitted that in 10 years the UK will have more than 5 million muslim followers resident! How many will be extremist followers? I do not have a problem with the choice of religious faith anyone choses so long as it does not affect the way of life of my family circle plus in no way does it attempt to put them in fear of injury or death nor should it try to convert others by any means. Its simple. Britain is where it is thanks to previous ministers more concerned with their own lifestyle And finances than looking after or protecting those who voted for them. This coalition has no doubt made mistakes (Nimrod Harrier Ark Royal) are recent examples, however this coalition got into office sadly with no idea of how little cash was left nor what labour had signed up to only days prior to being evicted from office. Typically now in opposition along with some press Android BBC members it is the sole fault of the coalition in attempting to make repairs. I do have concerns that ministers get the military things right as I have family exposed if it goes wrong. Its time politicians listened to military men who have the knowledge also the war experiences to make the right decisions on equipment also manpower levels.
