We flew from Paris to Miami early in January. B747-400. Excellent flight, comfortable seating and the food was very good, as you would expect with Air France. Seven weeks later the return flight was as bad as the outgoing was good. Again a 747-400, but an old one with the most uncomfortable seats I have endured for many a long time. The entertainment system was of the kind we were familiar with in the early 70s. A few of those small 14" screens hanging from the ceiling with a take it or leave it programme. From where I sat the glare from lights made the screen impossible to see, and my headset socket was broken delivering only one side of a stereo audio. The food was dreadful. I am surprised that AF allowed it on board.

What would a complaint to AF customer services result in ?

A complaint? I think it would be a waste of time. having lived in France for nearly 6 years, I can tell you that customer service is not a strong point here. In fact it does not exist. The last person to be considered in any transaction is the customer. All those stories you see on TV about lousy tradesmen and suppliers are really true. The only time I ever received good customer service was from an Electrical retailer called DARTY. Its not surprising. I discovered they are owned by COMET. Alternatively try using a firm that employs Poles or Turks or some ethnic group. Its part of the way of life.............just chill out and go with the flow.

Ron, I've flown with Air France on more occasions than I care to remember. My experiences have been similar to yours. On the long-haul they're better, but on the short haul they're just about down there with Olympic in my view. I have had a few good flights with AF, but they have been far outnumbered by the bad ones. (Poor food, indifferent service, unexplained delays etc.,). I have a loyalty card from KLM and of course they're in partnership with AF. I would fly anywhere with KLM, but they are always trying to push the AF side of the deal; frankly I wouldn't fly anywhere with them that I didn't have to, and KLM would always be first choice.

I do agree, but frankly I am stuffed. My next trip to Orlando will be on the new direct AF service from Paris which starts in June. (B777). I can fly Nantes/Paris/Orlando and return very conveniently and at a much lower cost than by any other route and with through baggage from Nantes. It's Hobson's choice. I have looked at all options including Gatwick/Orlando (Connecting Flybe from Nantes - with no through baggage) and it just cannot be done at anything like the cost esp when overnight accommodation is concerned. I can route Via KLM or Iberia or American but the costs are just way out of court. Its not like the old days when my employers paid for me to turn left whenever I stepped foot on the aeroplane. On my last trip, the subject of my post, I knew the captain but the flight was so full he could not get us a seat up front. What an unlucky coincidence!

I flew the same rotation at the end of december and returned end of January, both on 747-400 and both were absolutely disastorous, if you were in couples they never allocated seats together, flights were both overbooked, take-off was delayed both times because people were trying to swap seats, food was atrocious, cold pasta as the first meal, warm pasta for your main, and dont even get me started on the TV situation, for a scheduled National airline, not to have seat-back tv's on long-haul flights is ludicrous, and £550 for the privalage.... Rant Over.... Id never fly with them again anyway!!!
