I see from the Daily Post that Eddie Stobart Group is investing heavily in Widnes and Runcorn creating training and operational facilities. With developments of Stobart Air at Southend and Carlisle also scheduled does this Widnes/Runcorn plan present a business opportunity for Liverpool Airport? With such massive investment just down the road from LJLA it may be opportune to talk with Stobart, particularly since their takeover of Aer Arran's freight operation. Any thoughts?

They are heavily involved with haulage contracts within the area. Not sure who in the Runcorn area but the Widnes operation is mainly for a Tesco Northwest distribution centre. Having walked past it recently I can tell you this is massive and can be seen on the approach to 27 just after the Runcorn bridge.
I suppose it will depend on who they deal with but I can't see any significant opportunity for JLA other than the odd biz jet or divert from Carlisle. JLA would need to develop it's own dedicated freight distribution centre and ask Stobart to run it for them before we'd see any great advantages from this set up.

The Group is into road, rail and air logistics.
Locally they have the road and rail and an airport nearby where they can build from scratch what they want.

Stobart are involved with Weston Docks at Runcorn. This is from Wikipedia, saves me typing it. In August 2007 the owners of the Port of Weston, The Westbury Property Fund, merged with the Eddie Stobart Group to form the Stobart Group Limited. This group plans to develop the site into an inter-modal port facility to enable freight, currently carried by road, to be transported by rail and water. This will mean increased warehousing, new container handling facilities, an extension to the existing West Coast main line rail siding, a new link road, and improved navigable access between the dock and the Manchester Ship Canal. No mention of air freight.

Thats interesting Brian. Don't Peel's plans for the Port of Liverpool share a similar objective? If Stobart are successful, there could well be a Peel buyout. Whatever the outcome, LJLA will benefit (if not already) from these developments through transporting ships crews and others with business interest in the area.
