On my last visit to the Far East,I was able to fly by a Dash7 of Berjaya air, from Singapore Seletar airport to Tioman Island on the east coast of Malaysia,It was of interest to me for two reasons,To fly in a Dash7 and to see the small airport at Tioman island,It is like a version of the old Kai Tak,with the Dash performing a 90 degree turn on to finals at about a mile due to terrain, there is also a hill at the other end of the runway ,so its back out the way you came in!,hope you enjoy the pictures.
Dash7 9M-TAK at Singapore Seletar airport awaiting departure to Tioman on the 1 hour 10 minute flight.
Berjaya air have now moved flights to Changi airport,as Seletar is a GA and maintenace airfield. There seems to be a lot of development going at Seletar,We performed a spiral climb over the airfield to avoid the nearby Changi traffic.
The Dash inflight.
The Dash on arrival at Tioman.
The terminal at Tioman Island.
Runway26 at Tioman, due to Terrain, there is no go around,as the high ground at the runway end would not allow it.
Transfer was by small boat direct from the airport marina,as there are only a few roads around the airport,I elected to stay in a remote fishing village 5 miles along the coast.
I am still not sure of the name of the village, and I stayed the night there!
My home for night, complete with transport,it was about 1 mile bike ride to the nearest bar,All was fine until a massive thunderstorm hit at about 1 in the morning, which made things interesting as the hut had a tin roof!
Sunset on Tioman.appartently the Hollywood film, South Pacific was filmed on Tioman island in the sixties.
The next day I got a local fisherman to take me back to the airport,to watch the arrival of the Dash from Subang(KualaLumpur)where I was heading,As the aircraft had to go down to Seletar and back,I was able to photograph an arrival and departure from the very short runway.
the landing
The Malaysian Air force, maintain an air sea rescue unit at Tioman.
and the departure
Our arrival at Subang airport Kuala Lumpur.
It will be interesting to see what will happen to air services to Tioman in the near future as the Dash7,s near the end of their lives, there is no replacement aircraft of the size of the dash7 that can land there, maybe Twin otters will return,or air service may even end a sad prospect for the locals.
thanks for looking
