With your permission I have submitted a letter that is on our own website. There are a number of Ex Eagle staff in the Liverpool and surrounding area that might be interested.
A letter to all Ex Eagle Staff
From time to time I get various people contacting me with questions asking for information about our airline. About three years ago I had an email from Rosalind Jones who now lives in France. Rosalind was the sister of one of the schoolboys who were killed in the Eagle Viking G-AHPM that crashed at Stavanger Norway in 1961.
She has been researching the accident and has now written a book on how the families have dealt with life since the loss of the schoolboys. Her research has been thorough and painstaking.
Rosalind contacted me a long while ago for help concerning the accident. Particularly about the aircraft, the accident report and how it affected the staff at Eagle at the time.
August 9th 2011 is the fiftieth anniversary of the accident and there is to be a memorial event at the memorial cross up on the Stavanger Holtehia mountain and later in the day a service of remembrance in the Stavanger cathedral. The mayor of Stavanger is planning both of these events.
I have been invited and to take part in the event, representing Eagle. I feel that it would be appreciated if I were to lay a wreath at the memorial on behalf of all ex eagle staff. Maybe you would like to be part of this remembrance. May I suggest a donation of £5 towards the wreath? Any monies that might be left over would be donated to the Norwegian Red Cross who recovered the remains of the Eagle crew and schoolboys.
Secondly, I have also had relatives of a much earlier crash of one of our Vikings
G-AJBO at Blackbushe contact me. I spent a number of hours trying to help them in their continuing grief in endeavouring to answer some of their questions about the accident. The flight was a trooping flight. The question of a memorial plaque came up during the conversations. I have spoken to the Ex manager of Blackbushe Airport and briefly to the present manager. They are happy to assist in any way. The suggestion has been made that a suitable memorial plaque be attached to the control tower where there are already two memorials. Again maybe you would like to be involved in this effort. May I suggest a donation of £5? Any monies left over would go to a suitable military charity.
With regard to this second subject you may be interested to know that the Austrians have erected a memorial to the victims on the mountain where the Britannia G-AOVO crashed. The Norwegians have erected a memorial to the victims on the mountain at Stavanger and the Germans have also erected a memorial to the victims of the Viscount G-ATFN accident at Langenbruck.
I would value your thoughts and comments and contributions
Many thanks
Kind regards
