I was reading a report into the future of Merseyrail and found out that when the existing stock of 507 & 508's are retired we are to get refurbished Thameslink trains as they are to have new. These trains are of duel pick-up, ie 25 kv (o/h) and 750 d.c.(third rail), ideal for our use when the electrification of Liverpool to Manchester and Huyton to Wigan is completed in 2015. However why do we always have to have the cast-offs from London as the existing fleet also came second hand from the South? Maybe there has been a change of mind, as Merseyrail are advertising for someone to oversee the purchase of new equipment at a large salary, which you wouldn't need if we're getting second hand. Unless its another "job for the boys"!

It might not be in Merseytravels best interest to get them. Stagecoach have been given permission to carryout a pilot study whereby they will run trams on the main rail network. The experiment is due to begin in 2015 and will see trams traveling on the main line from Rotherham Parkgate Retail Park through Rotherham Central Station, to Meadowhall. From here they will travel along the existing tramway to Sheffield City Centre.
If that's successful it could well spell the end of trains on the Merseyrail network or more likely a mixture of the two. Should that happen we could well see trams running from the airport to the City Centre via South Park Way.

The electrification is 25kv overhead lines. Some preliminary work has already been carried out on the bridges to make sure the o/h will have enough clearance. At my local station, Lea Green, there is an old road bridge but instead of altering the bridge they lowered the track! This meant a section of Lea Green station platform had to be lowered too at the bridge end or it would have been too high for passengers getting off and on! What the trains will be is yet to be decided but as Manchester is involved we may get new ones. The original plan was that we get refurbished class 319 EMU's (Just google that and you'll get a picture.)

Latest news on the "new" rolling stock, is that due to the delay in signing the contract with Siemens, the refurbished trains, which we are supposed to get, are likely to be delayed until after the completion of the LPL to MAN electrification. Surely we won't have to keep the diesels going!
