ASHTON COURT - BRISTOL BALLOON FIESTA Saturday 11th August, 0545-0830. On Thursday, with the threat of a decent calm and hot weekend, a rather last minute decision to head off south to Bristol, with the expectation of 100+ HAB's and a decent mass launch. A 0245 departure (must be 5 years since I last discovered that there was such a time of day (night?) and that was when I last went down to the Fiesta!) and then played closure roulette with Runcorn Bridge to collect Beemer and Paul to arrrive at Bristol not long after dawn. At 0715 inflations got off to a start, but after the initial flurry of activity proceedings slowed down. Apparently, although conditions on the ground were near perfect, a few hundred feet up the wind was much stronger, so the larger HABs and Special Shapes would gather too much speed for safe and controlled landings in and around Bristol (breeze was from the south). A bitter disappointment after the night drive down, especially as the Firday am launch had numbered 80+ and the Friday evening launch 102! Nethertheless, 26 HAB reggies (16 launched, 10 tethered) entered the book, although only 2 were special shapes, along with mobile phone zapped RYRs, EZYs etc departing Bristol. Beemer and Paul might add a few, however some of mine: First to inflate, and was inflated the longest was the logo balloon of the Fiesta sponsors. A busy start to the morning launch First away around 0625 and looking good While the field remained busy, the pace of launches slowed Greatest surprise was a Brazilian registered HAB, 'Woodpecker' (well that was what the commentator called it) special shape PR-ZKC. Nice one! The other special shape inflated, although only remained tethered was this dragon on a box. By 0730 proceeding had slowed right down to just to handful of tethered balloons to entertain a quite considerable crowd. Oh deer, oh dear, oh deer ... could not resist these, noted on walking back to the car in the Deer Park section of Ashton Court Park.

My usual day that starts at Ashton Court continues to Bristol Lulsgate, then onto the IHM at Weston-super-Mare before turning for home. However today we settled on Kemble as a start and then a few of the airfield sites close to Kemble, before regaining the M5 and Gloucester Staverton.
KEMBLE, Saturday 11th August
Nice to have time to drive around Kemble without it being a matter of a quick stop en route elsewhere. Struck by just how open and public much of the airfield is, yet how the operational areas remain so secure. Struck too how neat and tidy the whole airfield is kept. With time and the sunshine, an opportunity to take a few decent photos too despite the fencing.

G-BOVS Cessna 150M fuselage only (Cr. 6.8.05) 'G-ESKY' Piper Aztec 250D (G-BADI) (N389DF) Boeing 737-3M8 KD Avia scheme
HS.125 Line-up
Six former RAF HS.125s lined-up very close alongside one of the internal chain-link fences. All black, military markings etc neatly painted out. Wearing registrations:
N19CQ, N19CU, N19EK, N19UG, N19UK, N19XY.
BAe.146/RJ Compound
In all, now 19 BAe.146s/RJs in external storage. All still reasonably complete and mostly with former operator colours painted out neatly.
G-BZAT, G-BZAX, G-BZAZ, G-CFZM, G-CGXS, G-CGYR, G-CGYU, G-CGZB, G-CHDG, G-CHFE, G-CHHA, G-CHIU, G-ZAPO, OH-SAJ, OH-SAK, OH-SAO, OH-SAP, OO-DJT, OO-DJW.
Of these G-CFZM was still in Jagson Airlines colours and titles and G-ZAPO still in full Titan colours. Confusingly G-CHDG still wears its former Lufthansa last two 'RN' (as in D-AVRN) on the tail top!

NympsfieldHome of the Bristol and Gloucester Gliding Club, another neat and tidy airfield. Although not far from Aston Down, it would have been near impossible to find without a Sat Nav - even then we had to turn around twice! They had a big competition on, as a result no one was around to permit us to enter the hangar. At the far end of the field were 21 gliders and 4 tugs, all awaiting the wind to die down and the thermals to strengthen. STAVERTON-GLOUCESTER
The entrance road here has changed since my last visit, which was not all that long ago. One of the older hangars has been demolished (the one with a Cessna 337 parked outside) and quickly replaced by a new one with glass doors facing the 'Cirrus' apron.
A change of format for this list, as I am relying on Beemer's data-base filtered listing: Regn; Type; C/no; Airline/Operator/Owner EC-KMX Technam P.2002 Sierra JFF 077 Private - arrived from Kemble! Way across the airfield was Agusta 109 "G-OPAS"/D-HCKV on its side on the fire dump, along with a twin (presumed Duke G-IASL), although there was no sign of the Citation now said to be with the fire service. (Now deleted the reference to a Cessna 150, which was me looking the wrong (Kemble) page of notes!).
Plus, with the Gloster Aviation Museum: WH364 Gloster Meteor F.8 - being repainted in 601 Sqdn markings XH903/G Gloster Javelin FAW.9 - now partly hidden amongst the hangars (XM569) Vulcan B.2 nose section. ....also others including a Canberra way over in the far corner of the airfield.

The fuselage sections belonging to G-STRP Boeing 737 are those with the airline name 'Dubrovnik' emblazoned upon them. Dubrovnik Airlines were a MD-80 operator, therefore my confusion in an earlier post and photo on the thread to which 'Carmedic' was responding.
