As a firm believer that you get what you pay for (except when you get ripped off) I was extremely sceptical about the positive reports I had heard and read regarding the quality of the Optus zoom scope, which currently retails for £24.99 in Aldi supermarkets. However,I recently got the chance to examine and test one of these instruments. The results were very impressive. The image at all power settings is clear and sharp. Though with all zoom optics, some light transmission is sacrificed at high magnification, illumination in normal daylight is more than adequate. The zoom and focus controls are easy to reach, smooth and effective. The scope comes with a three-year warranty, and a mini tripod is included. I know optical purists will say that for the price, this MUST be rubbish, and I have no idea how consistent the quality of individual units is. However I did buy one (actually it was bought for me,but that's irrelevant in this context) and it is just as good as the example I had previously tested. Considering my old (very good) telescope cost over £300 more than 20 years ago,I would say the Optus compares favourably in all respects...especially the price!

On Keith`s recommendation I went looking for the `scope.Several Aldis later I checked the Widnes store(next to the Morrison`s petrol station) and they had loads of them! They`ve even got one out of the box that you can try out. I also picked up a `TeamGB` cycle shirt for £7.99.Heavan knows what they cost at the events themselves.

I bought an Adventuridge 20-60x60 scope from Aldi about three years ago for I think about £12. It is great for the price and I use it on a tripod when I go to places like Hawarden. Regards Beemer.

It was a superb couple of days, the police at STN were excellent I have to say, had a good chat with a couple of them on Friday morning, and they are VERY on the spotters side, as they know......and this was a normal copper, not an officer, that they cannot be everywhere at once, and that the spotters do recognise someone acting "odd" and will report them! Made about 160 on the trip, and for me in this country is bloody excellent!!!!! Thursday was STN/LTN/Cranfield/FAB/Biggin Hill Friday was STN/Cranfield/LTN/LHR fly home! Mind you the normally 45 mins LTN to LHR took over 2 hours, the M25 was pure carnage!!!!!! Accidents and broken down cars everywhere!!! I bet that was a rushing about day trip???
The new pole is bloody great, and with it being x80, there is so much light going onto the pole that I can almost read trails off, not had a chance to try it out at night yet with the planets.

Markb...I use the old-fashioned "tripod" with four wheels (Ford Quadpod???) or a convenient fence post. The scope does benefit from some support at high magnifying power. I still have not managed to acquire a moving object with mine at any power. Perhaps it'll come with practice. Meanwhile,I still carry a pair of low-power bins!

Quick question my camera mount arrived today that allows me to mount it onto the scope eyepiece, when i line it all up to try it all im getting is a disc in the center of my camera screen which shows the detail of the item im looking at,tried zooming the camera and also adjusting the zoom level of the scope

Hi Markb,
I have heard of this disc phenomenon occuring when a camera is attached to a telescope.
The simple answer is that unfortunately the two instruments may not be compatible.
First generation digital cameras had such small lenses that they could usually "see" all of the image projected through a telescope. I got satisfactory photos of the moon with a tripod-mounted 40x scope and Kodak CX hand-held against the eyepiece. There was no annular border.
Now cameras have bigger diameter lenses, the opaque ring around the telescope eyepiece can obscure the outer ring of your camera's field of view.
Having not seen the mount attachment you are using I do not know if the distance between the scope and the camera can be adjusted. If it can,try mounting the camera closer to the eyepiece of the telescope. If this is not possible, try leaving out the mount and hand-hold the camera against the tripod-mounted scope on high-power zoom.
Depending on the equipment you use,all of the above measures still may not eliminate the problem.
Experiment...good luck!
Cheers,Keith
