LPL has done a sterling job here and should be congratulated for giving we who support the airport such in-depth stats. The Airport Management team obviously has this information, and much more beside I should imagine, at their fingertips when they discuss services with prospective airlines. The positive thing I take from LPL's stats is that LJLA is ahead on the routes served by the airport of many UK airports that are ahead of LJLA in the "top ten" league. Shows that the airport has done its homework and given the local users the routes they want - and will support. Finally, thank you to Dave for stamping on disproportionate criticism. Airports and airlines collect a vast amount of data gleaned from their operations. Most, if not all of it, is passed onto to the CAA. Anyone, I think, can obtain that data (minus, I presume, the personal stuff) for a (big) fee. Many thanks to those who find the stats a good read and many thanks to those who post saying so. Its something I find interesting to do and publish on here and thats despite those with other agendas who nit pick and post the barbed comments. |

Sorry for the off-thread, but thanks LPL for your continued work and contribution to this forum, despite often being the centre of one person's deliberate 'stirring'. Maybe such stats aren't everyone's main interest, but no one can deny the attention to detail you bring to this section. Dave, you do a mighty fine job yourself. Agreed stats may not be everyones cup of tea (just as collecting registrations isnt mine) but Liverpool as an airport has come a long way in the 13 years or so since EZY took up residence, and the figures prove it. |

The figures PROVE that the airport is on the up and we have every reason to feel cheerful.
On a lighter note --as we are being faced with a lack of route expansion what are the airlines going to do when we fill EVERY plane leaving Liverpool?
Given our rate of progress it seems likely to happen soon.LOL

This year will be harder than last, but you never know whats around the corner (into next year). |

Indeed, if you take out the London airports then Liverpool is the number one airport in 23 out of the 64 routes. The routes are to Barcelona, Berlin SXF, Carcassonne, Cork, Fuerteventura, Gdansk, Knock, Kos, Krakow, Limoges, Madrid, Milan Bergamo, Naples, Nice, Nimes, Oslo Torp, Porto, Reus, Rhodes, Rimini, Szczecin, Toulon and Warsaw. The average ranking goes up from the fifth place I mentioned earlier to second (2.44). |

These are scheduled passenger service passengers only (as stated clearly on the main table) - the ranking of Liverpool would be more realistic if total pax (ie scheduled and charter) figures were examined. Main differences would be to coastal Mediterranean destinations, Liverpool would still hold its position to quite a number of city destinations. Total pax would give a more realistic interpretation of Liverpool's rank - but I'm sure would still provide results worth broadcasting.
I would be interested too, in knowing which destinations are the most popular from the UK (as a total) that are not currently served from Liverpool ie the destinations where there is a decent market from the UK for Liverpool to take a slice of, if airlines were encouraged to offer the route.
Very interesting tables and rankings, well worth the compilation and posting - provided readers do take into consideration it is only part of the story. Surely though, the Airport's PR should be spreading the news publicly as to how well, selected LJLA scheduled services are placed/ranked on a national comparison (as noted by AndyH on the post above). Publicity and' flag waving' seem to be absent from the Airport at present - there is much to shout about, despite the recent knock-backs.

One of the reasons why I dont include charters is the flaky input by airports/CAA into the charter heading. For example, Heathrow has listed a route to White Plains in 2011 (very evidently a biz jet flight), the sum total of which carried 3 people. So if they did include that then why isnt every biz jet flight included as they are all charters? Why isnt the regular weekend biz jet flight to Palma from Liverpool included in the stats? |

Yes, even "official" figures are only as good as the person at the keyboard. In the example given, clearly someone in a handling agency has ticked the box 'charter' - after all the biz-jet had been chartered for the flight, even though 'private flight' would have been more appropriate! There are probably inconsistencies in the 'scheduled' figures too, but they are concealed in the numbers. The odd 'rogue' entry in what are statistically insignificant numbers should not be any reason for not using, what are the best figures available to compare all the UK airports.
When I used to use offical govt transport figures to compare travel methods from the UK to selected countries, I can recall that regularly every year around 300 people from the UK used to travel from the UK to the USA by rail!! All depends on the box they tick during times of survey. I used to teach this as an example of why not to take statistics too literally. The statistic was probably generated by a malicious false entry on a survey, multiplied up to generate an annual figure. Or possibly passengers starting their trip to the USA by Eurostar to Amsterdam or Paris for their flight. Either way, the statistic is plain daft.
