The photos of Mount Fuji posted by klm1041 remind me of very happy times in Japan. I am critical, as most are, about the atrocities perpetrated by the Japs in the war. I have posted or commented several times when the subject has come up.
We became interested in Japan when our eldest daughter's husband was posted there about 15 years ago.(US Navy.) Newly wed they had no entitlement to married quarters. She was determined to go out there but had nowhere to stay. We had previously hosted a student from Mitsubishi, and we asked if he could find somewhere for her. He contacted his boss who, without hesitation, made rooms available to her, in his home. They all became firm friends, as did we, and thus started one of the most amicable and long lasting friendships, we could all ever wish.
It was also the first of many astonishing acts of kindness we were about to encounter.
Among many strange, (to us) incidents.
We often took the train from Yukoska, a suburban town, to Central Tokyo. In the car park, the normal way of parking, because of the space shortage, was to leave your car bumper to bumper to the next one in the row, leave your keys in the car...and just go. When you returned, it might have been moved a bit... but that's all.
I wonder if life is still so simple?
