Yep - remember that. Was just starting to learn to drive. The thing I remember most was that at many places, someone would come out and serve you.
The cheapest in the world, by the way, is not in the Middle East but Venezuela, at 8p per litre.

I agree about Venezuela, I was there in 2005 and Petrol was cheaper than bottled water.

Nice photo Ron. Would it be of the petrol station in Cross Lane, Whiston?
When I first took to the road it was 36p a gallon.

Yes, Cross lane, Whiston. Is it still there? I worked there Saturdays and some evenings. Added to the newspaper loading at Speke on Saturday nights, these jobs paid for my flying lessons. The older, regular "ESSO" pump was hand operated. A year later, the two pumps were replaced by 4 new ones. See below. Who remembers grades like "ESSO GOLD" which was 100 octane and how many remember the "Tiger in your Tank" campaign?

Yes, Cross lane, Whiston. Is it still there? [/IMG]
That's just bought back a few memories. I drove past it about 2 years ago and all that remained was a forecourt canopy that had been erected after your photos were taken. I used to deliver sweets and cigarettes to it in the late 70's whilst driving for Palmer and Harvey. At the time they had a depot in Wood Street and inside it was one of those hand operated petrol pumps. Every morning we'd fill up. Most of the time the Transport Manager would do this for us - a pretty frightening experience as he was a chain smoker. And you've guessed it.... the fact that he was pumping petrol never put him off and the only thing protecting us from oblivion was a small fire bucket filled with sand and his fag ends.

When I worked for UU I called in at the petrol station on Northway Maghull to fill up with diesel. The elderly man behind the counter asked how I could justify the price of water. I replied, "Our product sells for 0.07p per litre. How much does yours sell for?" Got murmurs of approval from other customers and he shut up.
