Hi guys just a quick one. Got a Canon EOS500D and looking for a good lens to get long range snaps from but within a fair price range. Any help would be appreciated thanks. Cambo

Hi I used a canon 350, and 450 then treated myself to a 7D. On all of these I have used the same set of lenses. I use a 400mm Canon L series lens which cost about £1100 and a Sigma 150-500 which was about £650. Overall the versatility of the sigma outweighs the fractional loss of quality of the canon lens. It has a good zoom although does have a bit of creep ,and it is quite heavy, but as a good all round lens at a sensible price I would say it is hard to beat. Rugged and simple to use, that would be what I would go for. The zoom function is also by rotation whereas on the canon zoom ,when I tried one it was slide forwards and back which personally I found more difficult than rotation.
Hope this helps
Clive

Hi. I have the Canon EOS500D. A great camera, Stu on here dreams to own a Canon but is stuck with his Nikon thing. Anyway, if you can get one at a good price try a Sigma 50-500mm otherwise nicknamed "The Bigma". I have one of these and its a great lense for all aspects of what we want, one second I'm taking landing shots at MAN or LHR the next, overhead shots of trails and zooming in on the underwing reg, providing it isnt American or German.
The downside to it is at full 500mm it isnt too sharp, the second you need biceps the size of my ex, the thing is blinking heavy but well built, it takes alot of getting used too. I love it, plus it has a bracket if you need to attach a tripod/monopod. I've done a few searches and there are a few good second hand deals out there.

Columbo I have been looking at the "Bigma", just gotta save some dosh first, looking at spending around £500-800 on it.
Just gotta get the cash together first like then will get one.

If you're wanting to keep the budget low until you save up for the big Canon or Sigma lenses I can highly recommend the Tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 DI LD Macro and Jessops currently have it discounted to £120 when purchased online. I got this as a kit lens when I bought my Canon 1000D and despite the shortcomings of the body (which I'm still stuck with) the lens performs really well. It also has the advantage of a macro function which is sublime, a 'gimmick' you don't tend to get on the more professional lenses. It will resell easily with minor losses. I also have the Canon L 100-400mm zoom, it is a phenomenal lens but weighty and doesn't handle wind too well. You soon get comfortable using the push/pull zoom to the point where I find regular twist zooms a problem now! I just need a decent body to enhance the quality of this lens. Some examples with the Tamron; Regards, Garry

Thanks for that info guys Garry I think I will be taking up that offer. Lens, case and uv filter for 150, not bad actually. Cambo

I, too, have the Canon 550D witha Tamron 70 - 300mm Lens. Can't fault it. The macro is briliant as I found when I was photographing an insect in my garden!

Stu on here dreams to own a Canon but is stuck with his Nikon thing. Just you wait till I stick a 300mm prime on the end of it, it'll blow all your Canon/Bigma's out of the water!! ;D
