www.sunrail.com/welcome/page/projectmapsRailway enthusiasts might like to know about a railway renaissance in Orlando. Using existing track which has been purchased from the Feight company, Sunrail will offer commuter services from the north and south of Orlando. Rolling stock will be all new. Due to open in 2014, work is seriously well under way, and there is already talk of St Petersburg and Tampa wanting extensions out there. The track being used is also the one used by Amtrak on the Miami to Boston route. Another plan, very much in the thinking stage at the moment is to open up the old Flagler east coat line from Jacksonville to Miami with a new track branching off to Orlando. This is all in contract to the abandoned "TGV" style link from Tampa to Orlando, one of the busiest stretches of road in the south of the USA. The fast link was put forward as part of The Presidents's public investment plan to boost the economy. The federal government were offering to put up more than 95 per cent of the cost, but the newly elected Governor of Florida, Republican Party, vetoed it, even though the State had already agreed it. Finally, all that money went to fund a project in another state. The link to Sunrail, hopefully, can be seen above. RT
