I set out several weeks ago looking for photos in the MAS Collection that could be used to stretch members’ recognition skills. Despite good intentions, family pressures have prevented me from having the time to get this ready for Christmas. However, a little late, but still worthwhile.
RULES
Two points for each question, as directed in the question. Post your answers to as many (or as few) questions as you wish, I’ll give a mark as soon as I can, but not initially state which are the right or wrong answers. When the flow of those willing to have a stab at making a fool of their skills dries up, or someone scores 20/20, I’ll post (what I hope are) the right answers. As these photos come from the MAS Collection all are pre-1986, so those of a ‘certain age’ will have a great advantage - maybe! Use of reference materials alllowed.
THE IDENTIFICATION QUESTIONS
1.This heavily converted aircraft is one of two different NASA QSRA (Quiet Short Haul Research Aircraft). Question is, who built the original on which the conversion is based, and the original designation (civil or military will be accepted)? An Alan Curry photo, Paris 1983.
2. A well-known design that founded a whole family of biz-jet types. Point is, in its prototype form, as seen here, it had a different ‘marketing’ name (which I’ve removed from the cabin top!). Manufacturer and type name/designation required. A Martin Chell? captioned photo, Le Bourget 6.63
3. Manufacturer and designation needed. An official factory photo.
4. Manufacturer (I’ve removed the name off the ‘fuselage’), and the designation? Official factory photo.
5. This may be an Alison turbo-prop, test-bed fitted into a production jet fighter, but who built it and what is its US military designation? Photographer unknown, but at Bakersfield, California.
6. An aircraft that went into commercial production, but which type lies hidden inside this static test rig? Manufacturer and designation needed. An official manufacturers photo.
7. An experimental type that was never intended to go into production. Who is the manufacturer and what is the military designation of this type? A MAP photo, designation removed from the image.
8. Possibly the most obscure question here. So one point for country of origin of this design, the other for the designation. Photo could have been taken early '60s!
9. Only entered into a short production run. Who is the manufacturer of this prototype and what is the model number (removed from this photo)? Another Martin Chell? captioned photo, Paris 6.63
10. An early prototype of this production helicopter. Designation and type name please.
Remember, this quiz is only a bit of fun!!
