Dan Snow, looks at the history of railways from their very beginnings on BBC2 (tomorrow - Tuesday) at 2100 (9pm)
I think it could be the very first time John Moss is mentioned on TV. Liverpool born and bread, John was one the first railway pioneers, he was not only the very first chairman of the Liverpool to Manchester Railway but used his experience to found railways throughout Europe.
John Moss was one of the forgotten pioneers of his age and only re-emerged through my brother (Graham) purchasing a property he once owned. Graham unearthed a series of letters he wrote and on further research decided to write a book about him. Lets hope Dan does John justice.
Graham's book is called 'John Moss of Otterspool' and is available from Amazon.co.uk - should anyone be interested in purchasing it.

Well, after more than 150 years John Moss has finally emerged from the depths of obscurity. Not sure if he will be mentioned again (as it's a three part series) but he appears along with the modern day Birkenhead landing stage, Albert Dock, and LPL1 complex. I've provided a link to the program for our ex-pats and those who may have missed it via BBC iplayer (so you will need to be quick if you want to view it). It's an hour long and it starts off with Dan Snow at the site of Liverpool's original Edge Hill Station. John gets a mention 20 minutes in, just after the cotton mills of Manchester. Hi Ste. Unfortunately UK based TV Channels do allow Video or Live TV to be watched online outside of the UK. www.bbc.co.uk/terms/help.shtml#2They even block people if they use Proxy Servers. Mike

Use www.expattelly.com This will give you a UK IP address which you use via a VPN from any Internet access anywhere in the world. Worked perfectly for us in the US last year for iPlayer. It's is pretty reasonable.

Thanks Mike,
Never knew that. Seems a strange thing to do especially as they have or used to have a world wide service.
Do you or anyone else know the reason why?
Steve
PS. nice one Richard - must have been typing this when you replied.

Expatshield gives you access for free on your PC but its £5 per month for an ipad App. Used it a lot on our recent visit to USA. At home in France we get access via Freesat, ( or Sky if you want, and have a UK address you can register to....a friend maybe? ) or Expatshield if you need the iplayer services for catch up.
In the next month, I am trying another system whcih does not require a VPN, and therfore is faster, and is said to cost me abut 5 Euro per month.
If it works, I will post details.
The railway problem was good. Also enjoy the Michael Portillo series, more for the history lessons than the railways. Who would have thought that the first Mosque in the Northern Europe was built in Woking about 150 years ago?
