After many years of them residing in the loft, I have finally got round to scanning my old slides from Manchester Airport. I took these photos when I was 13 years old during three visits to Manchester between May and September 1969. I still have the airport timetables too!
All photos were taken with a Kodak Instamatic camera from the spectator balconies on both piers, mainly of British operators but there's a few 'foreigners' in there as well. Unfortunately as all my spotter logs have long since been lost to time and the camera lens being non too hot either, I'm unable to identify some of the aircraft registration numbers. Any help here would be much appreciated.
Hope these shots bring back some memories!
BEA Vickers Viscount V.802 G-AOHH.
A very poignant photo of Dan-Air Comet 4 G-APDN. On 3 July 1970 while on a charter flight from Manchester to Barcelona, G-APDN crashed into the Sierra del Montseny mountains near Gerona killing all 112 passengers and crew. The accident was blamed on a combination of faulty navigation, poor visibility and a misunderstanding of the aircraft's position by the AT controller.
Caledonian Airways BAC 111 509 G-AWWZ.
Monarch Airlines Bristol Britannia 312 G-AOVL.
Air France SE 210 Caravelle III. F-BHRK 'Corse'.
Aer Lingus Vickers Viscount V.808 EI-AJI St.Gall.
More photos in Part 2!

Dave, simply don't believe that these shots are not only 43 years old, but taken by an Instamatic!! OK, they are not pin sharp, but the colours are so natural. Brilliant, or have you sent hours cleaning and adjusting?
One of the few registrations that you have not identified is the Air France Caravelle. The name on the nose certainly starts with a 'C' and 5 letters in total. Only AFR Caravelle with such a name is 'Corse' F-BHRK, as listed in my 1969 CAM.
A tip for those that digitise photos, or need to find registrations on dark or shaky images is if working in a programme such as Picasa or Photoshop, try reversing the image to negative then vary backlight, sharpness and certainly zoom right and out of the portion of image with the registration.

Viscount, many thanks for your comments and for identifying the Caravelle, never thought to look at the name on the nose! Also a great tip on reversing the image to help with identification, will try that on the 707. For those interested, my workflow on the photos was as follows: Scanned from original 126 transparency, cropped in Photoshop CS6 from a 28mm x 28mm square format to a standard 'rectangular' format to reduce excessive sky, applied auto-color to correct overall magenta color cast (through age), also applied (a lot of) dust and speck removal plus overall image sharpening to finish.

I've looked through the MSAE 'Flypast' Ringway Movements of May, August and September 1969. As most of your photos are of regulars, I didn't hold much hope of identifying the dates, however while I can find no mention of the German DC-4 visiting, the Il-18 LZ-BER visited Manchester on 31st May, 6th September & 20th September.

Excellent pictures bringing back fond memories.
Thanks.
Its interesting to note that the airlines in your first three shots no longer exist as the way they did in 1969, all ending up in the melange which is BA, but the last three are survivors.

Roll on--what great shots--remember those day sooo well.
Pity there are no shots of the Hermes or Dan Air Yorks--but then we always want more.LOL
Really looking forwards to more photos--great technique shown--a great photographer;10/10.
When I get some spare time and a new scanner that recognises Windows 7 I will dig out my old slide collection.
They are not as good as yours by streets but will amuse. I suspect it will be the Winter before I can get to them but you have inspired me to make the effort.
Brilliant photos.felicitations.

In addition to the great aeroplanes shown here, the paraphernalia surrounding them is also of interest. It makes me realise, once again, how lucky we were in those days to get so up close and personal.
