I liked those colours at the time. Buses like these travelled from Wigan through Prescot down the A47 to Liverpool. I could board at the top of Lyme Cross Road and travel in. It was not possible to board these buses after crossing the county/city boundary, so it was often a quicker run into the city than many of the others. There were so many buses in those days .It was not necessary to have a time table. Amongst those I remember being available, or more or less the same routes, were
Liverpool 10, 510 St Helens Transport (To and from St Helens and Wigan) Lancashire United (to and from Manchester) Wigan Corporation Crosville to and from Warrington

Nice one jj. I remember these well. Many a time I'd board a Lancashire United Guy Arab at Derby Square and travel to Wigan, note book in hand. I think it was a number 32. Every time I went I'd pop into the depot to see what was there. Would always ask permission from the forman but took a sneaky peak round the more accessible parts first just incase permission was declined and even in those days often was. On the way back I'd try both St Helens depots, the town centre one was hard to get into and I'd regularly be told to try Jackson Street which was always accessible. There used to be an immaculate Hull Corporation Regent in there, anyone know if it still exists?

Nice picture and an interesting thread.Could one of you bus enthusiasts clarify something for me? I used to have a PCV licence/badge and at some stage fancied driving coaches.I was told ( and I don't think it was a spoof) that coach operating companies pay no tax,on anything.Fuel, servicing, spares etc etc.Is/was this true? Say 25 years ago.

Not sure where your coming from here MB but as far as I know coach company's have to pay tax/VAT on everything. However, those that operate local bus services do enjoy a few tax breaks but theses are not worth having as they lose more in claw backs. Probably why you don't see many operating local bus services.

I was thinking along the lines of Shearings,Wallace Arnold and the like ie the biggies. Took my PSV test in an AEC( I think) single cab, crash gearbox, at 5-15 PM on a Friday afternoon( can you imagine that?) down from the cathedral into Ranelagh St then Gt Charlotte St and all round town and the dock roads.Passed, but must have lost a stone in weight through sheer terror.
