I have a (too)small number of prints by Tim Nolan. He was ex RAF and a Monarch Captain based at Manchester for a while, he later became a training Captain with EVA and than retired I believe to Australia. At one time his prints were available from the Flightdeck shop in Heald Green. They closed the shop and concentrated on online airband sales for a while. Does any one know if anyone is still selling Tim's work? What happened to the stock held by flightdeck when they closed the shop premises? Any clues or suggestions much appreciated. Be lucky David

Have you tried the TAS shop in T1 or the AVP at MAN? they have a few pictures (mainly photos from what I remember), but they might know a source. I was told (though I have no confirmation of this), that a lot of the stock from Flightdeck was sold to TAS.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply. I had found the US B.737 but it doesn't really fit my collection. I would have bought the F-5E though. I have contacted both sellers and each print was a one off sale and neither have any clue when or indeed if they might get another one. I'll keep looking. Many thanks once again. Be lucky David

I know this is an old thread but regarding Flight Deck and it's change to AirbandOnline, David still owns the business and is probably the best person to ask about any stock that remained after the change! He can be contacted vis the online shop e-mail address.

I know this is an old thread but regarding Flight Deck and it's change to AirbandOnline, David still owns the business and is probably the best person to ask about any stock that remained after the change! He can be contacted vis the online shop e-mail address. Just a quick update, and seeing that this is in memories section David Fairbotham was the proprietor of Flight Deck shop. When the Heald Green shop (Finney Lane) closed he continued trading www.airbandonline.co.uk. I think he traded online from an address in Macclesfield. The website closed down some time ago. At one time in the late 1980s I think,Davids Flight Deck shop was located nearby in Wilmslow Rd before he moved the store to Finney La. The many times I visited MCR on spotting trips I always tried to call in and almost every time I went in,it was quite busy. Although I didnt buy any recievers there David always kept good radio kit for sale HF gear and antennas to match. At that time Lowe Electronics in Matlock was the holy grail for radio enthusiasts such as myself. He always had interesting stuff aerad & jeppersen charts, loads of books and the like and he was the man for info on anything unusual an the way in to or out of MCR . In the case of both shops I suspect that the rents were high then but must be up there in the cosmos now due to prime location. A house in SK8 or SK9 must require a merchant bankers salary nowerdays. Those were the days, when calling to either shop I made a bee line for the nearby bakery shop on finney lane,Peter Herds of Wilmslow...their epic warm sausage rolls and pork pies collected a plenty for sustenance prior to a days spotting at the bottom of Moss lane near the crash gate..and perhaps a quick pint in the Ship Inn or The Airport Pub to finish the day in good company with some local spotter lads before setting home. Both pubs had a good amount of regular local spotters at twilight, good banter could be had for a scouser ! All in good fun. Happy days indeed. Before Flight Deck I think there was a shop on the viewing terrace perhaps in the early 1980s, but my memories of it are fading. Before I had a car, a a teenager I used to bus it to MAN via the national express service direct non stop from Liverpool bus station which was cheap enough and ran every hour i think.

LOL. As you say...memories section.
David is a top chap - bought a few bits and pieces from him over the years. Always happy to give advice without any pressure for a sale.
There was a TAS shop at the airport but David's shops were never there. IIRC it started in Manchester then moved outwards!
Spent many a happy hour at Lowe's (mainly in the company of Tony talking about circuit designs) and used to do some 'beta' testing of radios before they went on sale. Very sad day when the retail side was sold off to W@nker & Sh1ton. At that time I think Richard retired so he could spend more time flying?
Pre-car Ringway was a cycle ride and (usually) perch at the brick works.

Just to add to the David Fairbotham and Flightdeck shop theme, This interesting receiver was purchased by a friend of mine in another part of the country. Made by Swinburne Electronics based in Birmingham airport, this CR600 model uses crystals for the different frequencies. Quite rare now, I know of 2 other owners in the UK. This one most definitely lived its life in Manchester. You never know but Is it yours ? Some more photos, The 6 crystals for different user frequencies can be seen at the centre rear of the chassis. Its amazing how clean it is in there after all this time. Without a doubt, a Manchester spotters machine..with liberal use of DYMO tape machine..very 1980s ! Now the rear and something that surprised me. Yes sold by David Fairbotham no less. And from a trading address that I have not seen before. A very fine purveyor of airband related items in the North West of England, a very well respected trader throughout the hobby community. This must have been Davids first shop 58-62 Lower Hillgate, Sockport. Do any of our members recall going here ? Now it is a branch of Richer Sounds, I think they have been there a long time which is rather fitting continuing the radio trade at the same shop. Interesting item, the dealer label more so perhaps. David, If you are out there in "airband/aviation forum land" please get in touch via pm..Hope you are keeping well, lots to catch up on..tnx very much.

Yes, I remember taking my son there when we lived in Cheadle Hulme (ca 1983-6). The reason I remember it so well is because it is just down the road from the recording studio 'Strawberry Studios' set up by 10cc, which I also took him to see and it is also very close to Hopes Carr, where the BMA Argonaut came down in 1967. I knew David Fairbotham quite well in those days. He knew where I worked and was always interested in a bit of gossip. I remember that he moved to Wilmslow Road and I went to the shop there a few times. By the time he'd moved to Heald Green I had left the area and lost touch.
I suspect you're right about the rents, rx. The area was very up and coming at the time, and the footballers (amongst others) had begun to discover it; I remember several rather twee fashion shops opening in that block.

Has Darren aquired that receiver or just photographed it?
I visited the shop in Stockport twice when David had it and once just after Richer took it on (didn't buy anything from Richer but wanted to look at the build quality of an amp they had in.....tended to use Doug Brady for all hi-fi gear except speakers)

AH. Don't recall ever seeing one so that's a nice find....only a few years ago he had no airband receivers (or Fairford patches!). I have a DR100 and DR600 in the collection. Many years ago I managed a couple of websites. One (www.acars.net, much to the annoyance of several major companies at the time!) you might have noticed with your interest in the Lowe Airmaster detailed all of the available software as well as very full decodes of the ACARS message types. Back then I beta tested the software for the Author and for Lowe. Later also for Rainford Software. Eventually the website content (not the domain name, though I no longer own that) was handed over to members of the acars mailing list as my interest wasn't in tail numbers. Another of my websites was about airband radios with a strong bias to SRC and AOR equipment as I had also been involved in testing those. I have examples of every SRC model in my collection. Both sites were heavily ripped by other people but all that remains these days are most of my photos on rig websites...and a lot of people with a SRC manual with a page missing (due to a file naming error when I did the scans). Anyway as this is nothing to do with Tim Nolan at all I'd better stop but given the fact that there are B52s at Fairford at the moment a screenshot I took as an example for one of the two software packages available for the SRC R-535 is kind of relevant can be seen at www.airbandradio.info (I hthought about rebuilding the radio site so bought the domain...other things got in the way of websites)
