This is a very interesting thread to which I would like to contribute.I have some pretty good photos of Jurby air days in the mid-80s but can someone give me( if it's possible) a simple sequence as to how to send photos ( with attached text) to the forum.I don't want to get involved with Facebook,Twitter and other dross if possible.Hope someone can help.Keep it dead simple OK. Well, 'simple' it didn't prove to be! Apart from the Winter storms, floods, and power cuts that all had a go at 'mb', there proved to be some fundamental computer incompatibility that prevents mb from uploading photos to the forum. He even brought in a 'computer geek', to no effect. So now for 'Plan B' - mb has emailed his photos to me, and here they are. They are scanned from prints, and with the passage of time the colours had faded somewhat. So I have restored the colours in photoshop, before posting them here. G-BIGI, Jurby, 16 Aug 81 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Mooney 201 G-BIGI at Jurby on 16th August 1981 G-AYIT, Jurby, 16 Aug 81 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr DH.82A Tiger Moth G-AYIT at the same event. In my earlier description of various events at Jurby, I think that I forgot to include the annual Air Rallies organised by the Association of Manx Pilots (AMP). These may, or may not have been associated with air displays, or perhaps just included a few display items. G-AZRG, Jurby, 16 Aug 81 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr PA-23 Aztec G-AZRG of Woodgate Aviation, also on 16th August 1981. G-BCIL, Jurby, 15 Aug 82 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Grumman AA-1 Trainer G-BCIL, on 15th August 1982. G-BCOO Jurby, 15 Aug 82 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr DHC-1 Chipmunk 22 G-BCOO, also on 15th August 1982. It still carries its former UAS badge. G-APTP, Jurby, 15 Aug 82 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Piper Tri-Pacer G-APTP, on 15th August 1982. G-BDIC, Jurby, 15 Aug 82 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr DHC-1 Chipmunk 22 G-BDIC, on 15th August 1982. Note the Pitts Specials of the Rothmans Team in the background. I have a photo somewhere of them parked up at Ronaldsway, presumably this same weekend. G-BBTH, Jurby, 14 Aug 83 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Cessna 172 G-BBTH, with an un-identified Piper Arrow, a further year later on 14th August 1983. G-BASO, Jurby, 14 Aug 83 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Lake LA-4 G-BASO, also on 14th August 1983. I was at Blackpool Airport when this aircraft called for fuel on its way to Jurby. We were expecting several Air Rally transits through Blackpool, but only G-BASO pitched up. G-BKLP, Jurby, 14 Aug 83 photo Maurice Blenco w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Cessna 172 G-BKLP with another G-BEUY beyond. There are also several aircraft queuing for take-off, including a yellow and white Beagle Pup, all on 14th August 1983. 67-14666, Jurby, 14 Aug 83 photo Maurice Blencowe w by Philip Pain, on Flickr OV-10A Bronco 67-14666 from Germany, which was definitely a display item on 14th August 1983. There is a photo somewhere of two Bronco staging through Ronaldsway for this Jurby event. That's it, and the big mystery with mb's lovely photos, is how on earth were there three consecutive Summers of glorious sunshine!!??

Continuing to scan slide photos from my Jurby collection, and here is the 1990 RAFA Display, a small affair held on 12th August 1990. As far as I am aware this was the only event held there in 1990, so these photos constitute the majority of the aircraft movements that year!
ATC, Jurby, 12 Aug 90 (1) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr I took two photos inside the 1941 Watch Office (Control Tower), and as can be seen the interior had been completely stripped of its fittings when the IOM Government ceased using it as a civil diversion airport. However it can also be seen that a small truck load of tables, chairs, radios, etc was sufficient to bring it back into use as an ATC Control. I think that the Ronaldsway Airport staff greatly enjoyed their annual 'summer camp' at Jurby! If memory serves me correctly the ATCO (far table) is Martin Cowley, together with his ATC Assistant Phil Chadwick. Sitting on the table centre facing is the Ronaldsway SATCO Dave Jeffers, whilst seated on the window sill is ATC Engineer Chris Bridson. The other people are the display pilots receiving their briefing from the display organisers.
ATC, Jurby, 12 Aug 90 (2) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr This second photo shows ATCO Martin Cowley (standing) with SATCO Dave Jeffers with his back to the camera. Note also Martin's yellow sweatshirt with the "Get 'em down safely with ATC" logo plus scantily clad lady.
Incidently the Jurby Watch Office was built to a standard wartime pattern, except that it was one of only four to be fitted with larger windows (normally not done for blast reasons). One of the other four famously remains in use - at Duxford with the Imperial War Museum.
EI-AND, Jurby, 12 Aug 90 w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Three Irish visiting aircraft included Cessna 175 EI-AND, later to be lost in the Irish Sea off Liverpool when it ran out of fuel enroute Guernsey - IOM, with fatal consequences for the two occupants. The Irish Press took great interest in the passenger, who they reported as allegedly being the IRA's accountant.

G-BELR, Jurby 12 Aug 90 w by Philip Pain, on Flickr G-BELR, another Cherokee, a 140. Apologies if I'm repeating myself with the story of the patched-up VR Hangar in the background. The damage was caused when a Sunderland flying boat blew up in 1945! The Canadian crew had taken off from a lough in Northern Ireland, hit an Irish hill in low cloud, taking off their hull bottom, knocking out their compass, and setting one engine on fire. They then blundered around in cloud before spotting an airfield through a gap. They elected to crash-land on the runway, still on fire, and with a full load of depth charges on board. Everyone then retreated from the scene very quickly, followed shortly afterwards by one of the largest explosions ever to take place on the IOM!

Now to move on to following years at Jurby ............
I promised (back in 2014) to continue to add to this thread, and I have finally done some more photos from my collection. These were all taken in 1992, starting with Exercise "Double Eagle" which was a Dutch and British Army invasion of Scotland. Those were the days!
657 Sqdn, Ex Double Eagle, Jurby, 21 July 92 (1) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr So on 21 July 1992 the invasion fleet positioned into Jurby, which was to act as a forward base. Here we have five Army Lynx and two Gazelles of 657 Squadron approaching Jurby from the south-east
XZ192, N, 657 Sqdn, Ex Double Eagle, Jurby, 21 July 92 (1) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Lynx AH.7 XZ192 'N' of 657 Squadron leads them in.
657 Sqdn, Ex Double Eagle, Jurby, 21 July 92 (2) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr And a marshaller with a gun brings them in. That's what I call marshalling with style! The low hills in the background are The Hills of Bride on the northern coastal plain of the IOM, and as a quick geography lesson they are a large glacial terminal morraine, made of a large chunk of Scotland deposited here by the last ice age. The former RAF Andreas is located just in front of them, in the centre of the photo.
Exercise Double Eagle, Jurby, 21 July 92 (2) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr And later in the day these are the five Lynx AH.7s of 657 Squadron departing in a cloud of grass cuttings.
Dutch B43, 299 Sqdn, Jurby, 21 July 92 (1) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Next to arrive were the four Bolkow 208s of Dutch Army 299 Squadron. This is B-43. Unfortunately the photography conditions were very poor, with a high mid-summer sun producing bright high level cloud during all the main activity.
Exercise Double Eagle, Jurby, 21 July 92 w by Philip Pain, on Flickr One of my all-time favourite Jurby photos - Commando Air Traffic Control, actually "Double Eagle" Exercise Control, and utilising the wartime 1941 RAF Jurby Watch Office, which thankfully is now a listed building and use as 'Race Control' building for motorsports events.
Next is a general view, taken around midday. Many of the helicopters had covers pulled over their cockpits as standard practice to avoid give-away reflections. Again not helping photography.
ZA771, D, etc, 657 Sqdn, Ex Double Eagle, Jurby, 21 July 92 (2) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr The full fleet of five Lynx, two Gazelle (one still in Gulf War colours) and four Dutch Bolkow 208.
ZA771, D, Jurby, 21 July 92 pfwp by Philip Pain, on Flickr Gulf War sand coloured Gazelle AH.1 ZA771 'D' of 657 Sqdn is prominent in this photo.
ZB692, E, Jurby, 21 July 92 (1) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr And the other Gazelle AH.1 was ZB692 'E' of 657 Sqdn. This view is looking North with the Advanced Airships hangar in the background.
ZG886, Ex Double Eagle, IOM, 20 July 92 pfw by Philip Pain, on Flickr Other Army helicopters were involved in the exercise, including Lynx AH.9 ZG886, seen here on 20th July 1992 coming in to Ronaldsway for fuel.
That's it for now, and there will be some more 1992 photos to follow ..........

Just a few weeks later in 1992 was the 9th August RAFA Air Display. This was not my finest hour, photography wise, something to do with trying to squeeze the Air Display into frequent trips to the Maternity Hospital in Douglas! But at least I can remember his birth date every year! XT601, 22 Sqdn, ZA168, XZ218, Jurby, 9 Aug 92 w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Wessex HAR.2 XT601 of 22 Squadron, together with SeaKing HAS.6 ZA168 of 815 NAS, and Army Lynx AH.7 XZ218 just appearing in the left background. XV292, LTW, Jurby, 9 Aug 92 (5) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Hercules C.1 XV292 of the Lynham Transport Wing, in 25th anniversary special markings and displaying the badges of all the Hercules squadrons XV298, LTW, Jurby, 9 Aug 92 (3) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Also present was Hercules XV298 also of LTW. A poor and blurred photo, but with some spectacular prop-tip vortices XX312, CF, 100 Sqdn, IOM, 7 Aug 92 by Philip Pain, on Flickr The flying display included the RAF's 1992 Hawk solo display aircraft XX312 'CF' of 100 Squadron, seen here at Ronaldsway on 7th August 1992. ZD377, AE, 20 Sqdn 233 OCU, Jurby fod engine change, IOM, 10 Aug 92 by Philip Pain, on Flickr Also flying at Jurby was Harrier GR.5 ZD377 'AE' of 20 Sqdn 233 OCU. Unfortunately while displaying on/off the Jurby runway it picked up some FOD (the runway was last resurfaced in 1966!), and after positioning back to Ronaldsway it was grounded for an engine change. Here it is seen being towed off to the Manx Airlines hangar at Ronaldsway on 10th August 1992.

Fascinating stuff, acklington. Very absorbing background and photos. In my days of going regularly to the Island, I did manage a couple of visits to Jurby, but this was in the 1960s when the Anson TX 226 was a regular (and rather boring!) visitor to Speke. I seem to remember that a couple of Cambrian flights did divert there during that time, though I have no details on dates. I think they just stayed there for a short time waiting for the sea mist to clear.

I did fly out of Jurby on a diverted Cambrian viscount in the 60s. The aircraft was chartered for a school trip to the Isle of Man, I think it was probably 1965 (maybe 1966). We flew into Ronadsway, but departed a few days later from Jurby due to fog. Two aircraft were involved......my first ever flights.

I've just added some more photos to this thread, this time for the 1990 RAFA Display.
However, to try and keep things in a correct sequence I've inserted them as an edit, above. Look for the section (above) with all the words in 'bold' typeface. [That wasn't really intentional, just finger trouble, but it will help you to spot the ammended section!]

Many thanks to 'Marquis' for adding his logs for the Jurby Air Displays 1981 - 1989. This prompted me to sort through some miscellaneous Jurby prints that I have been given over the years. Several came from a former Ronaldsway Airport Fireman who took his camera with him to 'summer camp' at Jurby. However, only some of these prints have dates on them, so I'll start off with the unidentified ones; XV708, 702-PW, 28 June 1979 w by Philip Pain, on Flickr This print does have a date on it - 28th June 1979, taken at Ronaldsway, and showing SeaKing XV708 '702-PW'. The June date makes it unlikely to have been destined for Jurby, but 'Marquis' did log it at the 14th August 1983 Jurby display. HH-53 Jurby (1) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr HH-53 Jurby (2) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr No date for this USAF HH-53 'Jolly Green Giant' at Jurby, and not on the 'Marquis' logs, so assumed to be a pre-1980 display. G-BBBU Jurby w by Philip Pain, on Flickr This Pitts Special may be at the 1980 Jurby display. It is G-BBBU flown by Richard Goode / Nick Ball, both well known on the display circuit at that time. G-BASL, G-BBEF, G-BGPU Jurby 1980 w by Philip Pain, on Flickr G-BASL, G-BBEF, and G-BGPU at Jurby, dated 1980. Can't say I've ever seen a PA-28 Cherokee display team before. Whatever will they think of next!? Shack AEW 2, IOM for Jurby, 16 Aug 1980 (1) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr Shack AEW 2, IOM for Jurby, 16 Aug 80 (2) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr The serial can't be made out on this Shackleton AEW.2 of 8 Sqdn at Ronaldsway, but the photos are dated 16 August 1980 which would make it a Jurby display weekend. 'Marquis' records another at the 14 Aug 1983 display. WZ507 (G-VTII), IOM, 1980 fw by Philip Pain, on Flickr Vampire T.11 G-VTII - WZ507 seen infront of the (then) Ronaldsway Airport Fire Station in 1980, and then two further photos of it performing at Jurby, presumably on 16th August 1980 WZ507 (G-VTII), Jurby, 1980 fw by Philip Pain, on Flickr WZ507 (G-VTII), Jurby, 1980 fw by Philip Pain, on Flickr The underwing ferry tanks have been removed for the display performance. XS596, 115 Sqdn, Jurby, 15 Aug 82 photo unknown w by Philip Pain, on Flickr One of the best of the photos, showing Andover C.1 XS596 of 115 Sqdn, parked at Jurby, and logged there by 'Marquis' at the 15th August 1982 display. XZ964, P, 231 OCU, IOM for Jurby (1) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr The pilot stood in the Harrier cockpit looks very much like John Farley, renowned Harrier test pilot. It would be interesting to know if it actually is Farley, indulging in a bit of RAF display flying? G-BEDF, Sally B, IOM fw by Philip Pain, on Flickr And finally, the well known B-17G "Sally B", G-BEDF, seen taxying in at Ronaldsway. As far as I'm aware it only ever displayed twice at the IOM/Jurby, and this later colour scheme it is wearing would correspond with Marquis logging it at the 18th August 1985 Jurby display. That's it for this selection of Jurby prints, and any corrections or additional info would be welcomed.

With many thanks to Ivor Ramsden of the Manx Aviation & Military Museum, he has sent me a better view of the 233 OCU Harrier GR.3 at Ronaldsway, taken on 14 August 1983. The photo is obviously part of the same sequence but shows the whole aircraft to be XZ964 'P', not 'N' as I stated. I have amended my post above. XZ964, P, 231 OCU, IOM for Jurby, 14 Aug83 cw by Philip Pain, on Flickr 'N' was obviously nearby at Ronaldsway as its pilot appears in both views of 'P'. Note also the fin top of a Manx Airlines F-27 behind the Harrier. Probably G-OMAN?

Very many thanks to Acklington for all his hard work restoring my (many originally fairly grotty - so some I don't recognise !) photos - I will claim in my defence that I was using a fairly cheap Yashica camera with only a 80/200 lens - how I wish I had been using an extra 100 !
There was more activity at Jurby in the 90s and 00s, including quite exciting air racing, which I guess might make a good subject for another thread - perhaps next winter ?

Hello All,
I do intend to restore the missing images, but it is a big task finding them all and reloading to flickr. However, it is forecast to rain all this week (and next?) so I might make a start soon.
Sorry for the delay.
