No knowing anything about Buses I have a question. Returning from a trip to Frodsham on Monday this week I saw a large single decker heading towards the town the unusual thing was that on the roof running about 3/4 of the length from above the driver towards the rear was a large white tube like thing. Anyone tell me what it is as I have not seen one before, or not noticed it.

Looks like a tube from side but is one of the gas buses roof mounted units.....
Regards Dave.

They maybe environmentally friendly but as a cyclist having first hand experience of these coming from behind me, they are a nightmare. If it's a sunny day the first notification that they are even there is if you see their shadow on the road. All other times it's, were the blue blazers did that come from!!!! Although I've never driven one I have no doubt from a drivers point of view they are equally scary, with cyclists and pedestrians being totally unaware they are there. Is it just me or is anyone else reminded of Corporal Jones's van when they see them? P.S. Just had a thought. Wonder if it would be possible if they could fit them with a warning device, not quite as harsh as a horn, that the driver can activate as they approach cyclists/pedestrians they feel may need to be aware they are there. Something like the vehicle reversing warning but 'vehicle behind you' or even play 'Jingle Bells' at Christmas. Only a thought.

Thanks Speedbird, those links were very interesting. Your right, fitting such a device would save the bus industry countless £m's in compensation claims alone, not to think of the legal costs. Having said that, (reading the Wikki article) the UK powers that be seem to have their heads stuck well and truly in the clouds. It is clear that America, Europe, Japan and probably countless other nations all agree their needs to be a safety warning device fitted to these vehicles - all but the UK that is. I hope that their response is not financially motivated i.e. the cost of fitting/retro fitting the device to all such vehicles. I could be wrong but I can't help thinking of the 'Ford Pinto' saga. Anyone not familiar with the 'Ford Pinto' case or want to know more, click the link below; jamesptaylor.wordpress.com/2007/12/15/the-ford-pinto-and-the-price-of-life/

Why don`t the manufactures of the vehicles fit a warning device as standard, which could be active on delivery or activated as an option later, rather than do an after production refit ? It is the same problem with the now numerous Hybrid cars floating around. I drove a Lexus 4x4 recently and it was very odd to turn the key and hear nothing and then silently move off in total silence and providing I kept below 30 mph it remained silent.
