France intends to close the camp in Calais known as "the jungle", where migrants gather to try to reach the UK.
Immigration Minister Eric Besson told French television that the illegal gathering of tents and shelters should close imminently.
The jungle has replaced official camps like Sangatte as a gathering point.
Mr Besson said the closure would send a strong message that people traffickers could no longer use Calais.
'Humane operation'
Mr Besson is due to hold talks on the issue with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on Thursday.
He said it would be the local Calais authorities who would set the exact date for clearing the makeshift camps near the port but added that in any case it would be closed before the end of next week.
Some 1,500 migrants are now living in insanitary settlements in Calais and neighbouring areas, hoping to cross to Britain.
The minister promised that the operation would be carried out humanely and that each illegal immigrant would be offered the chance to apply for asylum or to return voluntarily to their country of origin.
Many of the migrants come from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The minister insisted they would not be forcibly returned.

Not much change there then--they will still get onto lorries to sneak into the promised land of money with no work and free housing. Didn't we intern the Italians and Germans when we at war with them? Why have we not interned the Afghans who arrive illegally with a pocket full of drugs and a desire to send money home(for what I wonder?) I worked with an Afghan who turned up one day with a brand new Golf--I knew his income and asked how he got such a great car--his response--my brother is a solicitor and he keeps people off my back. When I accused him of selling the packets of white powder from home he shrugged and said the Koran does not forbid enterprise-just alcohol. My seething was useless without proof but I WAS seething. Ah well the rest of his family will no doubt arrive via Calais despite the strong WORDS of the French Government (told you I was not a blinkered Francophile LOL) --more non statistical additions to the tidal wave.

Only allowed to continue as the UK has a spineless Government interested in only promoting themselves, and nobody with the guts or will power to stand and refuse these scroungers entry, let alone deport the hundreds of thousands already soaking us dry who got into by whatever means they did.

News today from this area is that the "jungle" is now surrounded and police and whoever are only waiting for ramadan to end as they don`t want to upset people any more than they will do. Funny how the French are taking on the role of border control for the UK Bit overdue if you ask me but better late than never. Providing all these unhappy campers head East aided by the French Police.

As I understand it, the French will offer assylum (residency) in France or a return home. This is a clever tactic, since those who apply for "assylum" and are subsequently awarded that status, will have the right, under European law, to travel anywhere in the EU. Guess where? A very neat way of shifting the problem to Londonistan, again. RT

Just knew it may be tooooooo good to hope this story could be fully correct. It seems today in a number of press reports the French Foreign Minister is now stating that those people in the camp who have family in the UK should be sent asap to the UK !!!!!!!!!! this is being backed by the UN apparently. There will be a decision made at a meeting today. I bet everyone in the camp will prove they have family in UK and they probably won`t be far wrong. O well nice thought while it lasted. Wonder if we get the whole of the UK to stand along the south coast with barrels of boiling tar we could repel borders as in old naval days. ?

When (as a nation) are we going to stand up and tell europe / UN 'we are not a dumping ground for the worlds rubbish'. Suppose too much to ask from the scottish mafia in downing street. Perhaps if we had a better relationship with our partners in Europe rather than being America's poodle, we could come to some arrangement with the EU and France in particular as to how to deal with these people. The UK is now the most hated country in Europe within the EU, largely because we pay so little attention to it. What I find significant in all this is that almost all are from Muslim countries, almost all are young single men, and -somehow- in countries where $4000 represents about five years salary at best, these people find the money to pay the traffickers. So where does the money come from in the first place? When I lived in Greece, there was a significant problem with illegal immigrants being brought onto the Greek Islands nearest Turkey; Lesbos, Kalymnos, Kos etc. All were Muslims, and the Greeks had an agreement with the Turks that they would be put in a C-130 and flown back to Turkey. Of course they kept trying, but they were always sent back. The problem has now moved to Lampedusa in Italy. To me at least, the whole thing is more sinister than perhaps we realise. Has anyone ever heard a reporter ask these people why the UK? They're already within the EU, which broadly has the same benefits wherever you are, but they don't want to go anywhere else but the UK. These single young men will get married, have a load of kids, bring over their relatives, and ultimately demand that we do things their way. The people who are behind all this would love to have a Muslim stronghold in Europe, and the UK is top of the list. We are already the biggest buyers of Afghanistan's heroin production, our guys are being killed out there on an almost daily basis, and their young men want to settle here! There are still plenty of jobs in the Emirates, Qatar and Oman, so why don't they go there, where they can be amongst their own?

I was watching a reporter doing an interview with some of those in the temporary camp, which is being cleared and when asked why UK, when they were already in the EU, the reply was the UK gives us a passport when we claim asylum but the French do not!!

The sinister hidden agenda seems to be that the Muslim religion want to make the whole world Muslim and then introduce Sharia law. The West in particular the UK are terrified of anything which could be the slightest of a hint towards being racist and therefore we end up with "reverse racism". and their goal gets ever nearer due to apathy and fear of a host country. (well UK anyway) I would also suggest that as far as the EU is concerned theu UK seem to be the only country which actually and keenly acts on all the rubbish legilsation thrown its way from Europe. I wonder how many other countries will be banning light bulbs by the end of this year, or conforming to lunatic legistaltion relating to Lumin levels of most types of lighting inside and outside buildings ? The endless list of idiotic decisions made in Brussells and handed out beggar belief.
