Very good one--had loads of Polish mates at college and many worked in the mines around St;Helens--good guys all of them but mad as hatters.LOL Read up on Polish history and you will find out why--reads like a fantasy novel.

Yes, I saw this going round recently and thought how great it was. Like the Romanian friends of my daughter. I never met such a small group of well educated hard working people in such a long time.

Romanians? Remind me-- who's side were they on?
AND of course in France you have to be careful to differentiate between Romanians and Roma--very different.LOL

Totally agree with the comments above. One of my best mates when I worked at BAe was a Polish bloke. However, the ones who are now in this country are a totally different bunch. I worked with two at MAN a couple of years ago, and they were useless. Constantly wanting days off for various reasons, unable to speak fluent English and without any background in aviation. However, they knew how to claim all the benefits,(their Polish countrymen help them out). I live near Wellingborough and every time I go into town during the day, every other person is speaking Polish. It's more like Warsaw then Wellingborough! My question is - if these people are so hard-working, how come they're not at work? I know there is a lot of shift work at distribution centres in the area, but it doesn't make sense to me. Either the government has no real idea of how many eastern Europeans there are in the UK, or it knows and does not want to reveal the figures. Personally, I suspect the former.

Visit most used tyre depots especially on the Wirral and most of not all people working at them are East European ? I have a friend living and working in Cheshire and the factory is full of Polish employees, the majority of whom she describes as rude, disrespectful and lazy and refuse to speak English. Not the same breed from the war days then it seems. However there are bed apples in all baskets. Our problem is the Grocer seems to fail to check on the quality entering the shop and will take anything so as not to offend anyone.
A press report this week told of an East European who has been arrested and deported 3 times for serious crime in UK but each time manages to get back into UK and commit further crime. America has the right idea "3 strikes and your out" meaning after the third conviction for any crime you get a life sentence. Sounds good to me.

I suspect Garstoboy's analysis is about right, except that I would give a third alternative. The government does know how many immigrants are in the UK but does not care.
Election day next year will result in some fine words from all parties, but of the likely winners, it will be back to normal as soon as the election is over.
The situation is no different in France.
When I was in UK, in rural Wiltshire, we were not directly affected by the taking over of our country. Now I live in rural France, and it is the same, but just go to Paris or Marseille or Lille, Montpellier, Lyon, Nice and most other big cities......
At least, as an immigrant myself, into France, I can fairly say that I am not a burden on the state. I have my own pension/investments and pay tax here. I wish the other 6 million or so other immigrants here were doing the same.

The damage was done LONG LONG ago---would you rather have obnoxious East Europeans or more moslem fanatics? AND just try counting how many of those are in the country ,swinging marginal seats--it would of course be racist to count ,or so I have been told.
I sometimes feel like a rat who has left a rapidly sinking ship--my visits to the UK to see family and friends just confirms my worst fears and as for watching UK TV--stopped ages ago as no news seems to be positive or encouraging.
As for being an immigrant in France--my Grand Father paid for my ticket fighting on the Somme and having a leg shattered by a German bayonette--and my Uncle Jim being at Dunkerque.--with 30,000 Free French. So frankly I feel like my family have covered my stay here.
I must say the locals have ALWAYS treated us well and despite having my leg pulled about our football team and no one wanting to talk about our rugby team when we beat the French all is ok here.
And we don't have a mosque on the doorstep which is unusual for England or France.--but we do have a pig farm--I voted to accept their extension--just love local pork chops.LOL
Guess I picked the right place to spend my retirement--the only time I have ever been lucky but it was worth waiting for.
Must go check on the SE5 replica being built at the local grass field airstrip--called Zen would you believe--it certainly is Zen for me/LOL
Before I forget--the Poles who built my house spoke no English or French but spoke German as a 2nd language--the builder's wife was German so all was ok. They were great workers and did a fantastic job that is still good 8 years later--they did booze at the weekend but as I bought the beer who was going to complain--great guys but ignored all safety regs to my frequent horror, walking across struts 4 floors up.
To me they were typical Poles--mad,drunk ,hardworking but so lovable.

Ok guys I would like to voice a contrary opinion. I say this as a citizen of Europe (article 17 of treaty when I did my law degree). We live (uk) in the six the biggest economy in the world, we have a working population of over 30million. We do not have social strife like France, overall apart from a few loons the uk is tolerant of all races and we all get on in harmony. Without the degree of immigration that the uk has we would not have a functioning health service as one example. Yes Eastern Europe immigrants have approx 17% of uk low paid jobs (today's paper) but we have not got sufficient manpower in this country to have the size of workforce we have.
We all love moaning when we read negativity in the media but without immigration we would not have the richness and diversity we have in our society. Who goes for an " English" after a few beers on a Friday night.
There you go alternative view. Let's also not forget we have been jolly Europeans since we joined in 72, viva la France and viva EU!
should stir debate here chaps

bulldog, nice outlook, but try running a Company that has to put up with the most idiotic and financially crippling ideas that some unelected morons in Europe demand that are implemented in UK with little or no discussion. Business leaders today reported that iy is near impossible to employ a suitable born and bred UK school leaver as they are totally below any required standard and immigrants are being taken on in preference. All down to pathetic teaching standards, no discipline at home or in the education section and very low levels of deterrent justice in the legal system.

How simple to dodge the colonisation of Britain by non integration minded foreigners.NO signs of any attempt to integrate after 3 generations--how do I know? Try working in Bradford and you will see a slice of the future. Sharia anyone? Coming to a city near YOU.
Oh and understanding the complex working of our benefits system does not count as integration;LOL

Just look at how many of our cities/towns have a "Chinatown" or Jewish Sector.

My neighbour has a Lithuanian partner. She recently had an accident at home and is currently on crutches. Apart from attending A&E, she will not see an English doctor. The reason given for this is that they don't 'trust' our doctors; however I suspect that they cannot understand English well enough to know what the doctor is explaining to them. So what do they do? They get a sick note, fly to their homeland, see a doctor (and of course the family) there, whilst in many cases still being paid, and much to their surprise apparently, still keeping their holiday entitlement. We currently have more than a million unemployed in the UK. Last time I was in the exec lounge at LPL, the receptionist was from eastern Europe. Do you mean to tell me that in the whole of Merseyside there was not one suitable local applicant? bulldog: Who goes for an 'English' on a Friday night? Well no-one of course, but how many of us have been to a Chinese or Indian restaurant where they only take cash? - "Card machine broken" - yeah right! Ever wondered why so many Asians are in businesses where cash is still king? Market stalls, taxis, corner shops, etc. Did you know that they are allowed to send money to their homelands without any controls? Try sending say £500 to a brother in Australia and see how many hoops you have to go through, 'to prevent money laundering'. This is how it works: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HawalaBefore anyone plays the racist card, I worked quite happily for PIA for three years and I ran a corner shop for 10, which is how I know about the money transfer and the lack of VAT payments because of cash payments. Some of my best friends are Asian...

Point taken digit and I agree with you entirely--some groups need a little space for religious reasons--ie jewish Sabbath --and strength to their arm--BUT and it is a big--some groups don't bomb our cities and create large no go areas for any white male [hope the use of white is not considered racist] Nor do they arrive in millions intent on forming a world kaliphate.
And yes I said millions and the numbers can only rise----
And on a brighter note when is someone going to open a Dubhai--LJLA--New York service from LJLA--or a Miami service to connect with the boats--you might say I'm a dreamer--but I remember spotting in the 60s when the excitement of the day was; "The aircraft now landing is a private Cessna from Blackpool"---and it wasn't a cop.LOL And NO ONE would believe the destinations and passenger figures today.
