For anyone interested in the phasing of construction or potential impact of road works, Mersey Gateway has developed an interactive mapping system (web address given below). Work seems to start in earnest later this month and as someone who drives from Hale to Northwich for work everyday it looks like I am facing a prolonged period of travel disruption. Still, it was the same story when the road works associated with Liverpool One were undertaken - a pain at the time but well worth the prize at the end. www.merseygateway.co.uk/down-your-street/

Found it myself this evening Andy. We are going to suffer a bit but well worth it in the end. The road widening scheme at Daresbury is a pain as I was queuing for 20 mins at the temporary lights the other morning. Its good to see the work going on in the river and look forward to the time when the bridge is being assembled. Regards Beemer.

The lights at Daresbury are indeed a pain and there until December. It effectively takes one of my route options out of the equation for the time being and means that when the east bound slip road to the A533 closes later in the month I will either have to follow the diversion through Astmoor Industrial Estate and then come back on myself to use the westbound slip, or route down towards Junction 12 of the M56 which has seen seen significant queues of late. Luckily I have a good boss and the ability to work flexibly...!

Luckily I have a good boss and the ability to work flexibly...! To help you on your travels to Northwich, there is a little back lane that you can use to miss all the traffic. When passing the Evenwood Farm Pub on the Daresbury Expressway you will come to the roundabout at Business Post, take the third exit instead of going straight on and you will be on Pitts Heath Lane. Take the first left into Waterford lane, follow it round to Newmoore lane which then changes to Calmington lane. At the mini roundabout take the second exit to Keckwick lane, then turn right into Delph lane (Take extra care when going over the bridge that cross's the Railway line, i toot my horn in both directions as its totally blind.), this route brings you near Junction 12 on the A56. If there is heavy traffic going towards the M56 you have the option of crossing the A56 and following Newton lane to the A49.

A couple of questions if I may.Firstly,is the new bridge going to be at high level over the MSC such that high vessels can go under it,if ever? Second,as I understand it both bridges are going to be tolled(which I deeply resent) so why, oh why, aren't the various Liverpool MPs screaming from the rooftops about another tax on getting into Liverpool? Unless you go round via Warrington at additional expense.Following yesterday's awful news for us Luddites about the Dartford Bridge, will the tolls be made electronic so doing away with booths and the inevitable clog-ups.I bet they will be ,which is great, but what about the many people who don't use computers or super swish mobile telephones?

MB the new bridge will not affect ships using the MSC. It will be electronically tolled but "local residents" get a free return per day, I believe. There is a good video showing the completed bridge and I will post the link to it. Regards Beemer. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnSYpbAXPoI

To keep up-to-date on progress and for further information on all matters related to the new crossing see: www.merseygateway.co.uk/The 'Down your Street' section shows areas of the works on many of the surrounding roads. Handy to get an idea of activity which may affect your journeys around Runcorn and Widnes.

The bridges will be free to Halton residents now (unlimited trips as opposed to the 25 per month planned originally). As already confirmed both bridges will use an electronic tagging system so doing away with expensive toll plazas. It is frustrating that they will be tolled, but like the tunnels these structures will need to be maintained and won't be cheap to do so. I'm sure before too long that the Greater Manchester Authorities will resurrect their plans for congestion charging so evening up the playing field a little.

At the initial stage of planning I pointed out to the enquiry team that, with tolls on the new bridge, the River Mersey had tolls from Liverpool city centre to Warrington. How, I asked, was this "penalty" going to benefit the local economy. We will, they assured me, take your opinions into consideration. What they meant was that my impertinent question would go straight into the waste paper basket. A city the size of Liverpool should have free access at all points. Yes, scrap the tunnel tolls at the same time as the new bridge opens and the local economy will benefit. Did they take any notice? Time has given us the answer. Rant over as i am tired of talking common sense to politicians who have their cloth ears on - permanently.
