Called at Wigg Island to see what work was going on regarding the new bridge. As the photos will show they have made a platform and are digging down for what looks like hole for one of the supporting pillars. Difficult to take a photo due to temporary fencing they have erected around the site. It would be good idea if the contractors built a viewing platform for interested party's to observe and photograph the proceedings from. Regards Beemer. Wigg Island was the site of a Mustard Gas factory in the 1st world war, hope they've decontaminated it!

Dont know if they have done much Widnes side, but in comparison to the speed they are building our new Royal Liverpool Hospital the bridge will take forever. In space of couple of months the for the new hospital the ground works are well advanced, two concrete lift shafts are towering skywards and the labs across the road are growing daily. All that I have noticed Widnes side is the grass on the roundabouts no longer gets maintained. They have chopped some trees down and put a road closed notice up. On Runcorn side they have made the square platform in the photos and have two cranes. I see about 12 men visible in the photo. Going to take an awfully long time at that rate of progress. The French knocked up the Millau bridge in three years 3 months from start to opening. Cant see this being ready in three years.
Even when finished no doubt it will be late, over budget and too small, because thats how we design everything..........
hopefully I will be proved wrong!

Noticed on Thursday that they have started demolishing the industrial units on the Astmoor industrial estate.

I once read that the USA was building 80 miles A DAY on the Alaska Highway after America was dragged into WW2.OK,it was graded ,gravel surface but what an achievement.

Can anyone explain why they need to build a temp bridge before the proper one?. When one watches the discovery channel about building bridges etc they never seem to do this. If traffic needs to cross why not use the existing bridge. ( when not clogged up of course) Is the temp bridge to aid materials transport to the site of the piers and I believe what they call coffer dams ( not sure if spelling correct on that one!)
Progress still seems painfully slow

"Is the temp bridge to aid materials transport to the site of the piers and I believe what they call coffer dams ( not sure if spelling correct on that one!)" Yes it is, and will be dismantled when finished with. Painfully slow !! No.It is going to take three years to build including approach roads and fly-overs and the bridge proper. Regards Beemer.

If you look on the Merseygateway website (or YouTube) there a couple of videos which show how the bridge will be constructed. The preparations for such a major engineering project take time. Once they get going in earnest you will be surprised how quickly the main bridge structure goes up.

This is being built in UK, so how can you expect it to be done with any speed ? I mean we still have vast areas remaining unaltered since being bomb damaged in WW 2 ?
